Greenfield boys’ tennis fell 4-1 in a home match against one of Western Mass’ best teams in Westfield Thursday afternoon at Greenfield High School.

Senior George Balis won the Green Wave’s lone match, defeating Shane Holloway 6-3,6-4 in third singles.

“Westfield has a reputation of being a good team,” Greenfield coach Andrew Varnon said. “I was happy we were competitive early in the matches.”

In first singles, Greenfield senior Fahrah Day fell 6-1, 6-0 against the Bombers’ Tristin Viale. Sophomore Victor Ivancev lost a competitive first set 7-5, before falling 6-1 in the second.

In first doubles, sophomores Aaron Do and Brandon Siow took the first tie-breaking set (7-6), however, they dropped the final two 6-0, 6-2. Connor Pedigree and Kevin Gifford lost their second doubles match 6-2, 6-0.

The Green Wave have the weekend off before a home-and-home series Monday and Tuesday against St. Mary’s. Greenfield will host the Saints Monday afternoon, and will visit St. Mary’s on Tuesday in Westfield.

Girls’ tennis

Belchertown 4, Turners Falls 1 — Olivia Oberg and Karlie Roux came back from a set down to win at second doubles and Belchertown High School defeated Turners Falls High School, 4-1, in an independent girls’ tennis match Friday afternoon in Belchertown.

Oberg and Roux lost the first set 6-2 to Turners’ Amber Taylor and Carlie Kretchmar but came back to win the second set 6-4. Because the match was already in hand, the third set went to a super tiebreaker and the Orioles’ duo won 10-8.

The lone point for Turners Falls (1-4) came at second singles where Kortney Thurber defeated Emily Hermparian, 6-2, 6-1.

Frontier 4, Mohawk 1 — Senior Celia Speth rallied from a set down to win her second match in as many days on Friday. The Frontier Regional School first singles player captured a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Mohawk Trail Regional High School’s Lilly Seaver to help the host Red Hawks to a 4-1 victory in a Tri-County League North match in South Deerfield

Tori Bowen also captured a singles win for Frontier (4-1, 3-1 TCL), winning her match at No. 3 against Mohawk’s Emilia Seaver, 6-3, 6-0.

Mohawk (0-3, 0-3) took its lone point of the day at No. 2 singles, where Mary Monohon won a wild three-setter against Frontier’s Morgan Farrick. Monohon outlasted her opponent, 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 10-8.

Frontier swept the doubles, where Anna Zera and Mary Laurens were 6-2, 6-2 winners at No. 1 and Ashley Lavasseaur and Ian Newman captured a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2.

Softball

Mahar 17, Smith Voke 5 — Hannah Britt smacked five hits and visiting Mahar Regional School put up multiple runs in four different innings en route to a 17-5 win over Smith Vocational & Agricultural High School in an independent softball game Friday in Northampton.

Britt had five singles and drove in four runs to pace an offensive attack that pounded out 16 hits. Freshman Skylar Dodge also keyed Mahar (3-3) with three hits and four RBI, while Joslyn O’Brien, Sarah Graeff and Jordan Fournier had two hits apiece.

Mahar led 8-3 after three innings, and the Senators pushed across six runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

That was plenty for freshman starter Megan Rich, who struck out 10 and walked four in the complete-game victory.

FC Tech 22, Sci-Tech 0 (5) —Thanks to another dominant effort, the Franklin County Technical School softball team stayed perfect in Tri-County League play on Friday.

The host Eagles scored nine runs in the first inning and 12 in the second, easily dismantling Springfield School of Science & Technology, 22-0, in a five-inning contest in Turners Falls.

Tech (4-2) registered 26 hits on the afternoon, with Jocelyn Crowningshield, Leah Wozniak and Ashlee Townsley leading the way with four hits apiece. Crowningsield and Townsley drove in three runs each.

Hailey Jackson and Shannon Kurkulonis totaled three hits each in the win, while Summer Gadreau, Shayla Demers and Rachel Shearer tossed in two hits a piece.

Shearer and Crowningshield combined to limit Sci-Tech (1-4, 1-4) to just one hit — a fifth-inning single. The pair struck out seven in total over the five innings.

The Eagles host Greenfield High School today at 11 a.m.
