The Greenfield baseball team toppled Frontier Regional, 2-1, on Monday in a Suburban East contest at Vets Field. The Green Wave (10-4, 7-3) got seven strong innings from Arthur Fitzpatrick and some timely defensive plays to help secure the win against the Redhawks (11-2, 7-2).

Fitzpatrick scattered seven hits with five strikeouts and a walk.

“It feels great because the last time we played Frontier we took a tough loss,” Fitzpatrick said. “I also pitched in that game and didn’t have my stuff that day, so it feels great to come back in my next outing against them and come out and pitch good.”

The Greenfield program honored Fitzpatrick on Senior Night along with Luca Siano and Malik Moore. All three players made key contributions in the win over the Redhawks.

Moore hit an RBI double in the left center gap in the second inning. The hit gave Greenfield a 1-0 lead. From his centerfield position in the top of the third, Moore cut down Jack Cusson who tried to score from second base after a single by Braiden Dion.

Siano delivered an RBI single in the third inning for the Green Wave.

Chase Zraunig helped turn a double play for the Green Wave in the top of the fourth. With runners at second and third, Zraunig stabbed a grounder and came home with the throw. Siano tagged the runner and threw to second base to tag the runner who had advanced toward third. Fitzpatrick struck out Grayson Bishop to get out of the inning.

Frontier left the bases loaded in the top of the second and totaled seven hits in the game. Joey Hutkoski took the loss on the mound. Shaun Baumann had an RBI for Frontier. The Redhawks play Hopkins Academy on Wednesday in South Deerfield.

Greenfield travels to Athol on Wednesday.

Hopkins Academy 8, Franklin Tech 1 — The Golden Hawks (13-1, 8-1) moved into sole possession of first place in the Suburban East with a win over the Eagles in Turners Falls. George Gutierrez had a hit and an RBI for Franklin Tech (8-5, 4-4).

Turners Falls 6, Southwick 2 — Ethan Eichorn got the win on the mound for Thunder on the road against the Rams in an independent contest. Porter Dubow had three hits with an RBI for Turners Falls (3-9). Liam Kerivan added two hits with three RBI.

Pioneer 6, Athol 5 — The Panthers used a five-run fifth inning to pull away from the Bears in a Suburban East win in Northfield. Evan Tsipenyuk (three RBI) and Brody Welcome (two RBI) led the offense for Pioneer (5-8, 5-5). Osiah Ballard got the win on the mound, striking out three hitters in seven innings.

Alex Lavigne had two hits and two RBI for the Bears (2-10, 1-7)

Softball

Frontier 10, Greenfield 0 — The Redhawks kept rolling with their 16th straight win in South Deerfield. Lexi Hawkins got the win in the circle, giving up three hits with eight strikeouts. Skyler Steele belted her 13th homer. Steele, Adelaide Ehle and Hawkins each had three RBI. Riley Tine had two hits including a triple with an RBI.

For Greenfield (5-7), Ella Rotkeiwicz had a hit and an RBI. Olivia Lemay struck out nine and gave up 10 hits for the Green Wave.

Mahar 42, Hampden Charter 17 — With the win over the Wolves, the Senators qualified for the Division 5 state tournament. Mahar (8-5, 8-1) scored 34 runs in the bottom of the third inning to pull away from Hampden Charter.

Girls tennis

Frontier 3, Greenfield 2 — Doubles competition helped the Redhawks (10-2) get past the Green Wave (4-3) on Davis Street. Brooke Charest and Hailey Fernandez won at No. 1 doubles over Adele Bross and Veralyn Jackson 6-1, 6-1. Esther Ehle and Jimin Ahn defeated Stella Longe and Clara Kelsey 6-3, 6-2.

Amy Mihailicenco won at No. 1 singles for Greenfield. Kayla Fagan won at No. 2 doubles for Frontier. At No. 3 singles, Lizzy Derivolkova of Greenfield outlasted Ella Sibley 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8).

St. Mary’s 3 Turners Falls 2 — Olivia Wolbach won at No. 1 singles, but the Thunder lost to the Saints in Montague. Kenzie Flaxington got the other win for Turners Falls at No. 3 singles.

Boys tennis

Frontier 3, Ludlow 2 — The Redhawks got the home win against the Lions. At No. 1 singles, Casey Bestler stormed back to beat Ben Goodreau 7-6, 6-1. Bestler faced a 5-2 deficit against Goodreau, who hadn’t lost all season for the Lions. Xavier Fripp beat Anthony Shucko 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Noah Nichols completed the sweep in singles competition for Frontier with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Colin McClintock

Turners Falls 5, Palmer 0 The Thunder swept the Panthers on the road. Noah Kolodziej, Mario Pareja and Vaughn LaValley all won in singles. Nethanel Martin and Daniel Lapinski won at No. 1 doubles. No. 2 doubles was a forfeit.

Girls track & field

Pioneer 66, Mahar 62; Turners Falls 77, Pioneer 56; Turners Falls 57, Mahar 57 —The Thunder got a pair of wins at the Woodward Complex, while the Panthers edged the Senators. Jakhia Williams was a first-place overall finisher in the 100-meter (13.48) for the Thunder. Harper Hake took first (2:46.02) in the 800-meter and the mile (5:55.72) for the Panthers. Stellina Moore placed first in the 100-hurdles (18.27), the long jump (15-6) for the Senators. Liliana Bordas and Maddie Keefe came in first (1:11.94) and second (1:14.78), respectively, in the 400-meter for the Panthers.

Boys track & field

Mahar 127, Pioneer 12; Franklin Tech 119, Pioneer 16; Mahar 76, Franklin Tech 67 — The Senators picked up two wins while the Eagles grabbed one win over the Panthers. Sam Bodenstein grabbed first overall in the 100-meter (12.37) for Franklin Tech. Danny Quigley took first (24.34) in the 200-meter for the Senators. Both sprinters finished in second place in each event. Orion Whitehouse was first (2:38.94) in the 800-meter and the mile (5:36.08) for Mahar. Jahleel McGinnis placed first (37-8) in the triple jump and the 400-meter (56.16) for Mahar. Carter Berthiaume finished first (6-2) overall in the high jump for the Panthers. The jump tied a program record.

Weekend results

Pioneer 12, Turners Falls 1 (five innings) — In a game played in Cooperstown, N.Y. at the Baseball Hall of Fame, the Panthers beat the Thunder in five innings due to the mercy rule. The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the first to pull away quickly from the Thunder.

The teams played on Doubleday Field. The name of the field comes from Abner Doubleday, the creator of baseball. The stadium opened in 1920 and seats 9,791 fans.

Tad Loud had three hits with an RBI for Pioneer. Aaron Meuse had a nice day at the plate with four hits. Evan Tsipenyuk had three hits with two doubles and five RBI. Brody Welcome and Hayden Girard combined three hits and three RBI.

Tsipenyuk got the win on the mound, pitching five innings with four strikeouts. Porter Dubow had two hits with an RBI for the Thunder. Jackson Cogswell had added two hits for Turners Falls.
