Shelburne, MA – John F. Manning, passed away on April 15, 2026 at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Massachusetts after a brave battle with cancer. He was 72.
John was born in Port Chester, New York, the son of Eugene and Gloria Manning. He grew up in Sea Cliff, New York with his parents and 3 siblings, spending a large part of his childhood at CW Post College, where his parents ran the riding program. As a boy, John developed a love of everything “horse”, an affliction that persisted for life. He began honing his equestrian skills early on, learning to ride and show horses and went on to share that knowledge generously with others.
He graduated from Cornell University in 1975 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. After graduation, John began a long career as a professional horseman; running stables and riding programs, achieving his “R” judging and course designing status with the United States Equestrian Federation, showing horses, and training horses and riders for the show ring. John had a special talent for horse show management and was involved at the highest level at many horse shows throughout the U.S. Most recently, he was instrumental in the development of the popular Nilforushan Equestrian Events in California. John was the hardest worker at a horse show; the first to show up and the last to leave. His career in the horse industry spanned over 50 years.
There was no accomplishment more important to John than being a father to his 3 daughters. He loved unconditionally and without judgment. He met difficulties with bravery and determination and always strived to be a better man. In his later years, John became a treasured mentor and friend to many who sought guidance. If anyone in John’s circle of friends or family needed counseling, he was always available to share his wisdom but his super power was his ability to listen.
In his retirement, John was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of having a boat and living near the ocean, fishing and enjoying the warm weather in Florida. He also developed a knack for gardening later in life and created a lovely garden at his house in Shelburne, Mass. He lived in Shelburne for 43 years and operated Biscuit Hill Farm there from 1999-2018.
John is survived by his 3 daughters, Eliza Hanna of Buckland, MA, Caitlin Manning of Shelburne, MA and Bailey Manning of Northfield, MA; a granddaughter, Genevieve Hanna, a bonus grandson, Jeremiah Erho; his sons in law, Ted Hanna and Jared Erho, and his 3 siblings.
Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Arms Cemetery in Shelburne Falls, MA. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 30th from 12:00-3:00 p.m. at 125 Reynolds Rd. Shelburne, MA.
