Whately’s 1980s well crisis to be explored in Historical Society program

WHATELY — Through the Historical Society’s “Whately Well Pollution Crisis and Its Consequences” program, attendees will get the chance to reflect on, or learn about, a time of crisis in Whately’s history that drew attention from The New York Times and other national outlets.

In the 1980s, East Whately wells were found to be polluted with several agricultural chemicals. The town declared an emergency, rallied the National Guard to bring water, and designed and constructed a municipal water system to get clean water to residents.

The program will feature a 1990 video produced by Mass Audubon and the state Environmental Protection Agency. Residents who lived through that time are encouraged to come by and share their experiences, while those who were not in town are encouraged to learn about how a small town banded together and solved a monumental crisis.

The program will be held on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. at Whately Town Hall, 194 Chestnut Plain Road.
