GREENFIELD — The man accused of stabbing his father inside the family’s downtown Greenfield restaurant in April will remain held without bail pending a July 9 dangerousness hearing in Franklin County Superior Court, where the case has been transferred due to its severity.

Carlos A. Naranjo, 32, appeared before Judge David Hodge on Tuesday morning to answer to seven charges from two cases. Defense attorney Nora Leovich pleaded not guilty on his behalf. All parties are due back in court at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, to discuss whether the defendant is too dangerous to be released from custody while the court proceedings unfold.

Naranjo faces single counts of armed assault with intent to murder a person 60 or older, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person 60 or older, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury as a result of the April 15 incident. Additionally, a charge of violating a restraining order and two counts of intimidation of a police officer stem from an incident late last year, though these are not related to the alleged stabbing.

The defendant was arraigned in Greenfield District Court on April 16, when he was represented by defense attorney Emily Shallcross, and pleaded not guilty to the charges related to the alleged stabbing. At the time, he was also ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. According to Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Suhl, Naranjo spent 40 days at the state-run Bridgewater State Hospital for a mental health evaluation, but Leovich said she could not disclose the results.

According to a statement of facts submitted by Greenfield Police Sgt. Corey Greene, Jorge Naranjo called 911 at 6:46 p.m. on Wednesday to request immediate medical attention after being allegedly stabbed by his son inside Roberto’s Italian Pizzeria on Federal Street. Jorge Naranjo was reportedly found in the kitchen with a significant stab wound to his abdomen and another stab wound to his right arm.

Jorge Naranjo was treated at the scene by medical professionals before being transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center for further treatment. He was eventually airlifted to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield due to the seriousness of his injuries. Javier Naranjo, his other son, previously told the Greenfield Recorder that Jorge returned home to Turners Falls on April 20.

During the police investigation, surveillance footage obtained from the New Inkwell News convenience store — next door to Roberto’s — showed a man whose physical appearance was extremely consistent with Carlos Naranjo’s running toward Main Street from the direction of the restaurant about one minute after the 911 call was made. He was arrested at a residence a few hours after the alleged attack.
