WHATELY – There are about 400 boxes of permanent and non-permanent records in limbo at the Whately Town Offices since the Center School and the old Town Hall consolidated in October 2015.

This has created the need for archiving and a comprehensive records management system that town officials hope to get authorization for at the upcoming special Town Meeting on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Adoption of one of the warrant’s eight articles would designate $24,000 to hire a contractor to inventory, organize and implement a management system for records that “haven’t been gone through in quite some time,” Town Administrator Brian Domina said.

Town Clerk Lynn Sibley said the permanent records, including meeting minutes, Zoning Board of Appeals decisions, and birth, marriage and death records, will be stored in a vault in the town offices at 4 Sandy Lane. She said non-permanent records, such as vendor warrants and correspondences, will be stored separately to await their scheduled date of disposal.

Domina said all the records, which have no historic value, are now stored in some warehouse space at the town offices.

“(The special town meeting) should be quite uneventful and hopefully quick,” Domina said.
