GILL — Whether by kayak, canoe, board or inner tube, the Gillbilly Paddle will take place on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
The paddle, one of Gill’s 225th Anniversary-related events, will launch from the Northfield Mount Hermon School’s dock on the Connecticut River, and will commence at the bang of Ray Steele’s cannon at 9 a.m.
The destination of the paddle is the French King Bridge, where the Millers River empties into the Connecticut. Those paddling are expected to reach the finish around noon.
Transportation for people and boats back to the docks can be coordinated with some advance notice.
Liability release forms are required for all participants. Consent and release forms for children (under age 18) must be signed by all parents and/or guardians.
Life jackets are also required by participants.
The paddle has been organized by Issac and Sorrel Hatch since 2013.
“The first year, it was just a couple of boats; recently, it’s been about 10 boats,” Issac Hatch. “We expect 15 to 20 or so this year with the increased interest. All boats must be non-motorized. We welcome canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, rowing shells, row boats and inner tubes. A large flotilla of local boat and water lovers moseying downstream.”
Issac Hatch said he’s always enjoyed boats, having built some himself, and tries to get on the water as much as he can. One of his goals is to get other people on the water as well.
“I saw it as my business to get myself out on the water as much as possible and to get as many other folks from Gill out on the water, enjoying the beauty right in our own backyard. After all, if the river is not used and looked after by locals, it’s more likely to be abused and neglected,” Hatch said. “The object of the Gillbilly Paddle is to have some leisurely fun on the river and meet other folks from Gill.”
Non-Gill residents are also welcome to participate.
