MONTAGUE — The body of an adult male that was found in the Connecticut River near the General Pierce Bridge on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as 74-year-old Lawrence Poirier of Gill.

No foul play is suspected at this time, according to Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Melissa Sippel. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

Greenfield Police Chief Todd Dodge previously explained that a detail officer had been working in the area and saw what appeared to be a body floating in the river. The officer called in the report, and authorities confirmed it was a body. Using a boat, crews secured the body and removed it from the water.

The General Pierce Bridge links Greenfield and Montague over the Connecticut River, prompting a response from police in both communities.

In addition to the municipal departments, Sippel said Poirier’s death is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, and members of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
