MONTAGUE — Police are working to identify a body that was found floating in the Connecticut River near the General Pierce Bridge on Wednesday, shortly after 1 p.m.

Greenfield Police Chief Todd Dodge said that a detail officer had been working in the area and saw what appeared to be a body floating in the river. The officer called in the report, and authorities confirmed it was a body.

Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Melissa Sippel said in a statement Wednesday evening that the individual was an adult male.

Crews secured the body and removed it from the water. Montague Police Chief Jason Haskins said work is now underway to identify the body and notify next of kin. Little information is available at this point in the investigation, he said.

At this time, no foul play is suspected, according to Sippel. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

Dodge noted that while the Greenfield Police Department did respond, the Montague Police Department is taking the lead on the case. The General Pierce Bridge links Greenfield and Montague over the Connecticut River.

“We just went down to help,” Dodge said.

In addition to the municipal departments, Sippel said the situation is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, and members of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
