NORTHFIELD — A man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Gulf Road on Thursday afternoon, according to Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell III.
The crash occurred in the area of 585 Gulf Road, where Dunnell said a Ford F-350 pickup truck with New Hampshire plates went off the road and struck a tree. The Northfield Fire and Police departments, as well as Northfield EMS, responded to find the cab of the truck fully engulfed in flames and the driver still inside at the time.
The Northfield Fire Department extinguished the fire and first responders assisted staff from the medical examiner’s office with removing the driver, Dunnell said. The driver was the truck’s sole occupant.
The crash was reported shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to Dunnell and Northfield Police Sgt. Oleg Cobileanschi. Cobileanschi and Officer Chad Sumner were the first officers to arrive, and Dunnell said firefighters got to the scene within 10 minutes.
The road was closed for several hours after the crash and reopened at around 5:30 p.m.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police and the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
