ATHOL — The community has supported Adams Animal Hospital for 70 years. Now, hospital staff members want an opportunity to give back.

The hospital plans to host an fundraiser for several organizations from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 21. Certified Veterinary Technician Danielle Rouleau said proceeds will benefit Canines For Disabled Kids, Northeast Houndsmen, the Athol Police K-9 Equipment Fund, and the North Quabbin Regional Animal Shelter.

“If you want the community to come support us, we really need to support the community,” she said, adding that the hospital chose organizations that help the “community, kids and pets, because that’s really what we’re for.”

According to Rouleau, the event will feature an interactive “build-a-pet workshop,” where children of all ages choose a fabric puppy or kitten to stuff by hand into a plush toy. She said children will also be able to insert sound modules to make their cuddly friend woof or meow.

Rouleau, who has worked at the animal hospital for 20 years, said children can then paint a “perfectly-sized pet carrier” to safely take home their new pet.

“One of our veterinarians will examine your new plush pet to make sure he/she is healthy,” Rouleau said in a statement, which also states children can sign an official adoption certificate as well. Rouleau said there are slots for 100 children.

There will also be a bounce house, food off a grill and an auction tent.

The Adams Animal Hospital was started by Dr. Howard Adams in 1947. Dr. Robert Bergantino took over the practice 40 years later.

This event will be held outdoors under a tent, rain or shine. The cost for “build-a-pet” is $15 per child if registered in advance or $20 the day of the event. Food and auction tickets are sold separately. Call 978-249-7967 to register or stop by the office at 1287 South Main St.
