Richard A. James, Jr.

Gill, MA – Richard A. James, Jr., 72, of Gill, MA passed away Monday 4/6/26. He was born in Greenfield, MA on February 11, 1954, the son of Richard James Sr. and Vicki (Dean) James.

Rick spent his formative years growing up in Gill at his grandmother’s home, a place that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He often talked about his love for the town of Gill, a community he would go on to serve and support in countless ways. In his teens, his father owned a skydiving center at The Turners Falls Airport where Rick was able to make his first jump at 16 years old, leading to a passion for skydiving, making hundreds of jumps throughout the years.

At just 13 years old, he met the girl who would become the love of his life. At 17 he enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed in Alaska as an aircraft mechanic during the Vietnam war. In a story that became part of family legend; after completing his service he rode his Harley up to Canada to seek out his childhood sweetheart. He convinced her to return to the United States with him and the two were married in 1974, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love and devotion.

Together they raised four children and built their family home in Gill in 1984. Rick worked as a lineman for over 30 years, for a time, owning his own cable construction company, Precision Cable. He dedicated himself to providing for his family through hard work and perseverance.

Beyond his career, Rick was deeply involved in his community. He spent many years coaching youth baseball in Gill, mentoring and encouraging generations of local children. He was known as a man who was tough as nails, yet he had the gentlest heart.

Rick had a passion for motorcycles, hotrods, the outdoors and the simple joys of life. He was a loyal friend, a devoted husband and a proud father. His big voice, strong presence, and unwavering support for those he loved made him truly unforgettable.

Above all, Richard loved his wife and children with his whole heart. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Besides his beloved wife of fifty-one years, Carole (Beaudoin) James, Rick leaves four children, Jesse James of Gill, MA, Chantal Doucette and her husband Peter of West Palm Beach, FL, Joshua James and his wife Laura of Bernardston, MA, Jason James and his wife Jessie of Orange, MA, 9 grandchildren; a sister, Kim Caron and half brothers, Joe Hopkins and Chad James.

Calling hours will be held Saturday 5/2 from 1-3pm at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square, Turners Falls.

A celebration of life will be held on 7/11 from 1-4pm at the Turners Falls Schuetzen Verein 55 Barton Rd., Gill, MA.
