SUNDERLAND — The town has asked for help from the Franklin Regional Council of Governments in order to make its roadways and pedestrian paths safer.
During a Selectboard meeting Monday night, Sherry Patch, town administrator, said the town has been awarded $30,000 through a Technical Assistance Grant, which is part of the Complete Streets Funding Program, to create a street safety plan with help from the council.
Eventually, Patch said, the town intends to apply for an up to $400,000 Complete Streets Funding Program grant. However, in order to do that, the town first has to gather data, and from that data, develop a plan.
“Once the plan is developed and approved by the state,” Patch continued, “the town will be eligible to apply for grants.”
The Complete Streets Funding Program is a MassDOT initiative intended to promote health and safety among residents and make towns cleaner and more environmentally friendly. According to MassDOT’s website, the grant will be used to create “safe and accessible options for all travel modes — walking, biking, transit and vehicles — for people of all ages and abilities.”
SOUTH DEERFIELD — Sugarloaf Street Cemetery has received quite a few upgrades lately.
Jane Trigere, a member of the historical commission, said a stone bench was installed on the last day of the fiscal year, June 30, by stonemason and town resident Sonam Lama. The project was funded using about $700 from the Historical Commission’s budget.
The bench is the newest addition to the cemetery, which is located just outside the center of town on Sugarloaf Street. Within the past few months, the town has also put up a fence along the road using Community Preservation Coalition funds.
“We wanted to public to feel invited into the restored Sugarloaf Cemetery,” Trigere said, adding that residents can use the bench when waiting for the bus, which stops at the cemetery.
