SHELBURNE FALLS — Once again, Arms Library presents the stunning puppets of the Mettawee River Theatre Co. with a free outdoor performance at the Buckland Shelburne Elementary School on Friday evening, Aug. 4, starting at 8 p.m.
The drama, “Before the Sun and Moon,” is drawn from an ancient Korean folktale, in which a young husband and wife discover the power of love through unexpected challenges and wild adventures. The show incorporates masks, puppets and other visual elements.
This is the 21st year the Library has presented this once-a-year performance by the Mettawee River Theatre Co. The company was founded by Ralph Lee in 1975. Lee, a 1957 Amherst College graduate, has created masks, unusual props, puppets and larger-than-life figures for the New York Shakespeare Festival, Lincoln Center Repertory Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera and Saturday Night Live.
Last year was the first summer Mettawee didn’t come to Shelburne Falls since 1995. Instead, the troupe performed four work-in-progress shows of the current program.
The performance is sponsored by Arms Library and Friends of Arms Library. For seating on the school lawn, lawn chairs or blankets are advised. In case of rain, call the library at 625-0306 for alternate plans.
