NORTHAMPTON — Michael C. Rosa, 36, of Greenfield, was found guilty Tuesday by Judge William O’Grady in Northampton District Court of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in connection with a January 2017 incident in which he kicked a young child inside CVS on Main Street in Northampton.

According to a press release from Mary Carey, spokeswoman from the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, Rosa was sentenced to 2½ years in the Hampshire County House of Correction with six months to be served directly and the balance suspended for 5 years with terms and conditions including that he comply with Department of Children and Families and participate in an anger management program.

O’Grady found Rosa to be not guilty on a reckless endangerment charge, the release stated.

“We are pleased with the verdict and sentence handed down today by Judge O’Grady,” said Assistant District Attorney Caleb Weiner, who prosecuted the case with Assistant District Attorney Lori Odierna.

“The defendant assaulted a small child in a public place and he has been held accountable for this unacceptable conduct. We are particularly thankful for the care, attention and courage shown in this case by the store employee who witnessed and reported the assault, and for the work of the Northampton Police Department in their investigation.”
