HAWLEY — Police Chief Stephen Deane is leaving his position after eight years of service and today, he’ll hold his last office hours from 10 a.m. to noon in the Town Office on Pudding Hollow Road.

“Stephen Deane has been in this role for a good, long time and is proceeding into a new direction,” said Administrative Assistant Cass Nawrocki. “Please feel free to come in and wish him well, as you complete your official police business.”

Deane lives in Berkshire County, according to Financial Administrator Virginia Gabert, and works for this town of 324 people about two hours per month, mostly issuing Firearms Identification Cards (FIDs).

Nawrocki said selectmen are assessing the town’s policing needs as they look to fill the police chief vacancy. The board is talking to neighboring towns about sharing a police chief, or to see if there’s a qualified officer available who could take on the additional responsibility.

“There are not too many parts to the job — serving legal documents, issuing FID cards and highway detail once in a while,” she said.
