HAWLEY — Although there are no contested races on the ballot this year, Hawley voters will be presented with a ballot question that seeks to affirm a Special Town Meeting decision to change the town clerk’s position from elected to appointed.

Since November 2024, the town clerk’s position has been held by Elizabeth “Ellie” Van Iderstine. Although Van Iderstine does not reside in town, Hawley appointed her to the role on a temporary basis amid a lack of candidates running for the position on the ballot. Should voters approve the change in how a town clerk is chosen, thus affirming the unanimous decision from a March Special Town Meeting, Van Iderstine would continue to serve in the role as an appointed official.

The town election will take place on Monday, May 4, at the Hawley Town Office, 8 Pudding Hollow Road. Polls will be open from 11:45 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In the case of some positions, there are no ballot candidates. Some individuals are running as write-in candidates and are willing to serve if elected. Known candidates include:

  • Selectboard/Zoning Board of Appeals/Board of Health, three-year term — Will Cosby, incumbent.
  • Auditor, one-year term — Jill Behringer, write-in candidate.
  • Board of Assessors, three-year term — Wayne Lemoine, incumbent, running as a write-in candidate.
  • Hawlemont Regional School District School Committee, three-year term — Ken Bertsch, incumbent.
  • Mohawk Trail Regional School District School Committee, three-year term — Robert Sears.
  • Moderator, one-year term — Julie Carantit, write-in candidate.
