‘Yoga for Wellness’ sessions start May 6

GREENFIELD — A seven-week “Yoga for Wellness” class will be held on Wednesdays from May 6 to June 17 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Greenfield Senior Center.

Attendees will use the tools of yoga to address concerns such as lower back and neck pain, headaches, insomnia and more. The sessions are open to those ages 55 and up with any level of experience, including beginners, but Senior Center membership (free) is required.

This is a mat yoga class held in the fitness studio; clean footwear is required. Attendees must be able to get down on the floor and up again unassisted.

Registration with a $65 payment is required by April 29.

Fire hydrant flushing begins Monday

GREENFIELD — The city will begin its annual fire hydrant flushing on Monday, May 4, to ensure hydrants are working and clear of debris. Flushing will continue through May 15.

Hydrant flushing will occur on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Pending changes due to weather, the schedule is as follows:

  • Monday, May 4 — From Barton Road south to Silver Street and Adams Road, west to Colrain Road.
  • Tuesday, May 5 — From Silver Street south to Sanderson Street and High Street, west to Colrain Road.
  • Wednesday, May 6 — From Sanderson Street south to Main Street and Parkway Street, west to Colrain Road.
  • Thursday, May 7 — From Main Street south to Montague City Road and Highland Avenue, west to Munson Street.
  • Friday, May 8 — All outlying areas and dead-end roads.

The city urges residents to avoid doing laundry during flushing periods and be cautious while driving when crews are working. Residents may notice discolored water and reduced water pressure.

May 4: ‘The Asian Diaspora in America’

GREENFIELD — Greenfield Community College’s Office of Institutional Mission, Culture & Climate will hold a virtual presentation titled “The Asian Diaspora in America,” featuring educator Andrew Lee, on Monday, May 4, from 4 to 5 p.m.

The free program will dive into the complexities of Asian immigration, the history of cross-racial solidarity and the resilience of Asian American communities.

Currently the assistant head of school at Fayerweather Street School, Lee has a career as an instructional and inclusion leader. His background includes years of teaching history in the Boston and Philadelphia areas, with a focus on multicultural education and identity.

Beyond the classroom, Lee serves as the board secretary for FAN Chinatown, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and uplifting Boston’s Chinatown. He is a frequent presenter on Asian American identity, and holds degrees from Brown University and Boston University.

Brown bag program returns May 7

GREENFIELD — The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts’ monthly brown bag program for income-qualifying seniors will be held at The Weldon apartments at 54 High St. on Thursday, May 7, from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

May 20: Crafting with puzzle pieces

GREENFIELD — Margot Peck will lead a workshop on crafting with puzzle pieces at the Greenfield Senior Center on Wednesday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Attendees will learn to make a decorative pin, wreath and/or other items. All materials will be provided, free of charge.

‘Connections’ group to meet May 21

GREENFIELD — Social worker Irene Woods will lead “Connections,” a group exploring ways to be proactive about making connections with others, at the Greenfield Senior Center on Thursday, May 21, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Ellie Harris to teach pour painting

GREENFIELD — The Greenfield Senior Center will host pour painting with Ellie Harris on Wednesday, May 27, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Pour painting is an abstract art technique where thinned acrylic paint is poured onto a surface to create flowing patterns. Rather than using brushes, artists tilt the canvas and use unique items to create a design.

There is a $5 materials fee. Space is limited to six. Participants are advised to register in advance by stopping by the Senior Center’s front desk.

Fiery Hope chorus to perform

GREENFIELD — The Fiery Hope chorus will present songs from around the world, with themes like freedom, peace, care for the environment, and the struggles and joys of daily life, in a free concert at the Greenfield Senior Center on Friday, May 29, from 1 to 2 p.m.

The concert is fully funded by a Greenfield Cultural Council grant and audience participation is welcome.
