SUNDERLAND — A portion of Amherst Road (Route 116) surrounding the plaza that houses Frontier Pizza was closed Tuesday morning after a vehicle struck and injured a pedestrian.
The Sunderland Police and Fire departments responded with South County EMS and State Police shortly after 5 a.m., according to Sunderland Police Chief Erik Demetropoulos.
Demetropoulos said the pedestrian, an adult man, was hospitalized with injuries he believes to be non-life-threatening. He added that the involved vehicle was not on scene when police arrived.
Northwestern District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Melissa Sippel, in an interview Tuesday afternoon, confirmed that a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in an incident that is still being investigated by the DA’s office. She noted that the crash was not fatal and that the victim is being treated for injuries.
Although he could not comment further on a state investigation, Demetropoulos commended the teamwork and collaboration between state and local public safety services during this incident.
“It’s great to see small towns working together with State Police,” he remarked. “It was a great team effort.”
According to the Sunderland Police Department, traffic was temporarily redirected through the plaza, both northbound and southbound.
