Jazzlyn Gonzalez netted the game-winning goal with no time left on the clock, tallying on a penalty corner to lift the Turners Falls field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Mahar on Monday in Orange.
The game was tied 2-2 at halftime and stayed even into the waning seconds of regulation.
Khalifa Seck assisted on the game-winning score for Turners. Seck and Eva Lareau were the other goal scorers for the Thunder, and goalkeeper Connor Glennon made seven saves.
Mahar’s Taylor Paluk scored twice, with assists coming from Carly Paluk and Kathryn McGinnis. Bella Burnett made seven saves for the Sens.
Mohawk Trail 0, Franklin Tech 0 – Neither team managed a shot on goal in a defensive standoff in Turners Falls on Monday.
Frontier 3, Minnechaug 2 – Three different Redhawks found the back of the net, and Frontier got back to the .500 mark behind a 3-2 Suburban League victory on Monday in South Deerfield.
Elsa Brown, Ashlie Galenski and Macy DeMaio all scored goals in the win for Frontier (2-2-1). Addie Harrington and Haly Doucette-Kaplan notched assists, while Brooke Charest made eight saves between the pipes.
The Redhawks fell to Sutton, 2-1, in action over the weekend. Addie Harrington tallied with an assist from Macy DeMaio, and Brooke Charest made four saves.
Greenfield 2, Westfield 0 – McKenzie Boswell and Payton Martin both scored goals and the Green Wave went on the road to snag an impressive road victory in Westfield on Monday.
Henley Gilstrap notched an assist for Greenfield.
Girls volleyball
Mahar 3, Turners Falls 0 – Hayden Comeau put down five kills and Madelynn Burgess racked up five aces, as the Mahar girls volleyball team won its fourth match in a row via a 25-15, 25-22, 25-10 sweep of Turners Falls in a Western League match on Monday in Orange.
Burgess also dished out 10 assists, while Mia Santana and Kamryn Hart tallied three kills each for the Senators (4-1). Santana and Angelina Alonso totaled five digs apiece to aid the defensive effort.
SICS 3, Franklin Tech 1 – Laura Fuess notched six kills and Janiylah Wan went for five aces and two digs for the Eagles in a 25-16, 24-26, 25-12, 25-17 independent loss on Monday.
Greenfield 3, Mohawk Trail 1 – The Green Wave stayed unbeaten on the season, moving to 5-0 with a victory over the Warriors on Monday in Buckland.
Set scores were 24-26, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21.
Emmalee Inman had seven aces and seven kills for Mohawk Trail, while Emma Canaday (10 assists, four kills) and Claire Johnston (two aces, four kills) also played well in the loss.
Boys soccer
Frontier 5, Pittsfield 0 – Five different Redhawks connected for goals, and Frontier secured its third shutout of the season with a convincing victory at Herlihy Field in Whately on Monday.
Frontier (3-1), which led 2-0 at halftime, received goals from Casey Bestler, Henry Pleasant, Carter Miller, Xavier Fripp and Ian Paciorek. Eric Larsson, Paciorek, Grayden Gifford and Tristan Valderrama registered assists in the win.
Frontier goalie Jack Cusson stopped all five shots he faced for another shutout between the pipes.
Chicopee Comp 5, Franklin Tech 0 – Rodney Blanc tallied twice for the visiting Colts, which turned a 2-0 halftime lead into a 5-0 independent win on Monday in Turners Falls.
Jacob George played well in a busy outing in goal for the Eagles.
Hampshire 7, Greenfield 0 – Joseph Moro and Noah Monteiro each netted two goals, and the Raiders cruised to a 7-0 independent win on Monday.
Liam Grahame-Lawson made 19 saves in a busy outing between the pipes for the Wave.
Turners 5, Ware 0 – The Thunder stayed unbeaten behind a four-pack of goals from Yolvin Ovalle on the road at Ware on Monday night.
Noah Kolodziej also scored for Turners, which improved to 4-0-1. Next up is a Saturday contest with Athol.
Smith Academy 6, Mahar 1 – Dylan Roy tallied the lone goal for the Sens, which fell under the lights in Orange on Monday night.
Brayden Gates assisted on Roy’s goal, which cut the deficit to 2-1 at the time.
Girls soccer
Franklin Tech 2, Mount Everett 0 – Faythe Sobieski scored the game’s opening tally late in the first half, and the Eagles tacked on an insurance marker after intermission to secure a 2-0 independent win Monday night in Turners Falls.
Layla Hammond also scored for Franklin Tech (2-1-2), and both goals were assisted by Melyn Ramirez.
The goalkeeping tandem of Shayly Martin and Cheyenne Ballentine combined to make one save for the team’s second clean sheet in as many games. The defensive unit of Mady Lynde, Samantha Duncan and Ariel Peters was dominant.
Golf
Franklin Tech 156, Athol 158 – Jack Day shot 2-under 33 and powered the Eagles to a tight victory on the road at Ellinwood Country Club in Athol on Monday.
Grady Deery shot 36 for Franklin Tech (5-0), while Braeden Talbot (40) and Mason Vassar (47) also contributed to the scoring total.
Athol’s Ethan Heuer shared medalist honors with Day, carding an identical 2-under 33. Dominik St. Andre (41), Owen Stoddard (41) and Brandon Adams (43) also played well for the Bears.
Frontier 161, Southwick 170 – Brady Wood’s 37 was the low round for the Redhawks, which held serve at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst on Monday.
Addy Wood and Jamie McCarthy shot 41 to pace Frontier, and Teddy McCarthy’s 42 also factored toward the Hawks total.
Pioneer 183, Hopkins 185 – Behind a 44 from Tucker Aldrich, the Panthers edged Hopkins Academy on Monday.
Weston Jones (46), Carter Gerry (46) and Mike Cyhowski (47) also scored for Pioneer in the team victory.
