It’s time for a change in Greenfield’s mayor. Last year, the city was found liable for racial discrimination “in connection with the 2020-2021 Sergeant’s promotional process” (a quote from the jury’s findings) because Mayor Roxann Wedegartner oversaw the promotion of three white officers over the only Black officer, Patrick Buchanan. She not only helped create this new cause of action against the city — already in trouble for years of racial discrimination by the GPD — but the city made several, insultingly low, nuisance settlement offers. The result: a $1 million judgment against Greenfield. She continues to delay justice for Buchanan by fighting the jury’s verdict in the Appeals Court. I call that taking the low road.

Virginia “Ginny” DeSorgher is the change we need. Over and over Ginny has shown that she will take the high road when it comes to racial justice, workers’ rights, and quality public schools. I’m standing with the Greenfield Education Assn., the Mass. Nurses’ Assn., and the United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 49, who have enthusiastically endorsed her. If you care about Greenfield’s future, please join me and vote for Ginny on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
