MONROE — After a successful 200th anniversary gathering last year, the Historical Society decided to host another party for residents.

The Historical Society is holding a block party on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Monroe Community Center, 3 School St., from noon to 6 p.m. The event will take place under two large tents, so it will be held rain or shine.

The block party will include a cornhole competition, live music by rock band Midnite:30, and food and drinks provided by the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department and Frenchy’s Food Cart.

Monroe is known for being the smallest town on the Massachusetts mainland, with a population of about 115 residents. The town celebrated its 200th anniversary last year, and those festivities inspired residents to want to hold another event.

“Everyone had such a good time last year, we wanted to do it again,” said organizer Sharon Oakes.

Also at the event will be a 50/50 raffle and a history display curated by members of the Monroe Historical Society. The display will focus on the children of Monroe, and will include historical photos, stories from 1940s teachers and graduation programs. While it may be hard to believe in this era of school regionalization, Oakes said there used to be four schools in Monroe.

There will also be a display of toys that are in the Historical Society’s possession, such as a rocking horse shaped like an airplane that was made by an inmate during the time of the Monroe Prison Camp.

The Historical Society will sell Monroe T-shirts, sweatshirts, postcards, mugs and other memorabilia at the event. Last year, the society created a Monroe history book that will also be for sale.

Oakes said that, with the exception of the 200th anniversary festivities, there had not been a similar gathering since the town celebrated its 150th anniversary. Because there is no central gathering space in Monroe, the Historical Society felt it was important to organize this block party.

“It is nice to get everyone together when we can,” Oakes said. “It should be fun.”
