Historic Deerfield exploring history of New England kitchens

DEERFIELD — Historic Deerfield invites the public to learn about the history, material culture and functions of the New England kitchen and its workspaces in the 17th and 18th centuries. The forum will take place both at the museum and on Zoom on April 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The one-day forum brings together historians, researchers and curators who will focus on the material culture and functions of the historic New England kitchen, including issues of domestic life, labor, class, room use, gender, technology and the quest for greater efficiency. Retired Historic Deerfield Senior Curator Nancy Carlisle will talk about technological and social advances in the kitchen, architectural historian Eric Gradoia will examine the changing structures and spaces of kitchens, and research historian Christie Higginbottom will explore New England kitchen gardens in the 1800s.

Attendees will also see demonstrations of historic cooking equipment, get a guided tour of kitchens in two of Deerfield’s houses, and participate in a hands-on workshop involving cooking tools and storage containers. To round out the day, refreshments will be served at Hall Tavern, along with an optional tour of the newly opened Barnard Tavern.

Registration for in-person attendance is $90 for members and $105 for non-members. Zoom registration is $40 for members, $50 for non-members and $30 for students. More information, including registration links, can be found at bit.ly/3ItfWX0.
