GREENFIELD — Freshman Caleb Kimberly struck out 11 hitters to lead the Greenfield baseball team to a 13-0 win over Smith Academy in an independent match up on Thursday afternoon.

The game ended in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule at sunny Vets Field. Kimberly did not give up a hit until the fourth inning. He formerly played baseball at Mohawk Trail before beginning his career for Greenfield this season.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Kimberly said. “It’s basically my first time playing competitively on varsity. I am really excited for the future of this team. I think we can make it to Western Mass. I am excited to see how far we can go.”

The right-hander gave up a walk and a single before a wild pitch in the top of the fifth. He then recovered to end the game with three consecutive strikeouts.

“He’s still learning,” Greenfield coach Tom Suchanek said. “When he keeps the ball down he’s tough. Sometimes he has a tendency to overthrow. When you overthrow the release is up here, and the ball isn’t going to be down there.”

The offensive onslaught begin immediately for the Green Wave (7-3) with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, Nico Siano hit a well-placed double to clear the bases and give Greenfield a 3-0 lead. Siano finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and a walk.

“It was a fun time out there,” Siano said. “I always go up there ready to swing. I just try to do my part when I am at the plate. Try to get a hit any way I can.”

Arthur Fitzpatrick singled before Chase Zraunig and Urijah Jenness walked to load the bases for Siano. Another run scored on an error for Greenfield. Fitzpatrick knocked in a run with an RBI groundout in the second inning, making the score 5-0 for the Wave.

Greenfield loaded the bases again in the bottom of the third. Bryce Zraunig drew a walk to register an RBI before an RBI double by Bodie Burke. The double by Burke scored two runs for the Green Wave. Fitzpatrick then picked up his second RBI of the game with another RBI groundout.

Sam Bucala picked up an RBI on a groundout in the fourth. Chase Zraunig closed out the scoring with a two RBI single in the fourth inning.

Turners Falls 12, Lee 0 (five innings)— The Thunder trounced the Wildcats in the Berkshires. Kainen Stevens pitched five innings of one-hit baseball with five strikeouts and six walks. Julian Kaiser led the offensive charge with two hits and two RBI. Porter Dubow added two hits including a double and an RBI. Nathaniel Trinque notched a couple RBI with a pair of bases loaded walks. Tyler Newton doubled for Turners Falls (2-5).

Frontier 12, Athol 0 (five innings) — The Redhawks left Tool Town with a convincing Suburban East victory over the Bears. Brady Poreda and Austin D’Urso each had two hits for Frontier (8-2, 5-1). Jack Cusson, Carter Miller, Grayson Bishop, Konnor James and Braiden Dion each drove in runs for Frontier. Miller earned the win on the mound, allowing two hits with six strikeouts in three and two-thirds innings. Alex Lavigne and Brent Boudreau had hits for the Bears (0-7, 0-5).

Softball

Minnechaug 9, Franklin Tech 8 (eight innings)— The Falcons edged the Eagles in a Franklin East matchup in Turners Falls. Franklin Tech (1-8, 0-6) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Skylei Lapan, Amelia Rider and Sofia Melnik each had a double with an RBI for the Eagles. Lyla Mickiewicz picked up two hits. Brayleigh Burgh pitched eight innings, giving up eight earned runs with six strikeouts and three walks.

Frontier 13, Hopkins Academy 1 (five innings)— Lexi Hawkins got the win in the circle for the Redhawks in Hadley. Hawkins struck out eight hitters in the Franklin East matchup with the Golden Hawks. Raine Wonsey went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a home run for the Redhawks (12-0, 7-0). Skyler Steele added four hits in four plate appearances with two RBI. Addie Ehle went 3-for-4 with a two RBI and double.

Track & Field

Competing at the MSTCA Warrior Invitational in Foxboro, Mahar Regional’s Stellina Moore earned a personal best (15-4) in the long jump. The jump was good enough for 14th in a field of 43 athletes. Moore hit another personal best (17.79) in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing eighth. In the high jump, Moore placed fourth (4-10) in a field of 23 jumpers.

For Pioneer Valley Regional, Harper Hake earned a personal best and a third place finish (12:45.08) in the 2-mile. Hake earned another personal best in the 800-meter (2:39.03). The run placed her 12th overall. Addison Chapin registered a personal best (14-2) in the long jump for the Panthers. She added a season best in the high jump (4-4).

In the 200-meter, Mahar’s Danny Quigley established a personal best (24.11) and finished 26th.
