Forty-eight minutes weren’t enough to decide a winner between the Greenfield and Chicopee football teams on Friday at Szot Park.

Defense was the story of the game, as neither the Pacers nor the Green Wave were able to put any points on the board in the first half.

Chicopee had the opening score of the game in the third quarter to go ahead 6-0 but following an interception in the fourth, Greenfield’s Ryan Pulizari punched in a touchdown to tie things up.

The Pacers looked be headed for a win with one minute to go in regulation after getting the ball down to the goal line, but the Green Wave defense stood tall and made a stop on a fourth-and-goal from their own 2 to send the game to overtime.

Both offenses came to life in the extra time. Chicopee scored on its first possession and converted the two-point try to go up 14-6.

Greenfield then got the ball and answered with a Devin Buchanan touchdown run. But the visitors were unable to convert to two-point try, and the Pacers earned a hard fought 14-12 victory.

Greenfield is back in action on Friday when it travels to Belchertown.

“It was a defensive battle,” Green Wave coach Mike Kuchieski said. “Both offenses struggled. We played hard. They’re a good team.”
