Students at two local schools — Buckland-Shelburne Elementary School and Northfield Elementary School — received special presentations of “Garbage is My Bag” by Greenfield native Jack Golden last week.
According to a press release from Franklin County Solid Waste Management District’s Program Director Amy Donovan, the Springfield Materials Recycling Facility Advisory Board is sponsoring several of these school assemblies across western Massachusetts. “Garbage is My Bag,” an award-winning performance program, encourages recycling, composting, litter avoidance and positive environmental actions.
In the shows, Golden plays the comedic “expert,” Dr. T., short for Doctor Trash, who delves into a mountain of trash — and an even bigger bag of vaudeville and circus tricks — in search of answers to trash problems, the release explains. With a “Ph.D. in Garbology,” and a zany and irresistible personality, he juggles and jokes his way through a world of waste.
Donovan, who works on recycling and composting programs in Franklin County schools, introduced the speaker and made connections between the school waste diversion programs, recycling and composting at home, and the presentations.
