Thirty Franklin County residents have registered for the Oct. 4 Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

So far, five residents of Turners Falls, one from Millers Falls, 16 from Erving, two from Conway and six from Greenfield have registered to participate.

Traditionally, the walk follows the Boston Marathon course, according to a press release about the event. However, this year walkers are encouraged to walk wherever they choose: around their neighborhood, a hiking trail, a treadmill or anywhere else they are comfortable.

“While we can’t see everyone in person this year, we are excited for the virtual programming, which will give participants the opportunity to support breakthroughs in cancer care and research,” said Zack Blackburn, director of the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. “Together, from a safe distance, we will take critical strides in the journey to conquer cancer.”

The registration fee this year has been reduced to $5. The minimum fundraising requirements have also been reduced, to $100 for adults, and $25 for children ages 12 and under. In its history of over 30 years, the walk has raised more than $145 million, according to the release.

Each walker will receive a bib and a medal, and the first 5,000 walkers to register will receive a commemorative Jimmy Fund Walk T-shirt. To register or to support a walker, visit jimmyfundwalk.org or call 866-531-9255.
