The five-year anniversary of Girls on the Run Western Massachusetts will continue virtually next month.
The non-profit organization, which offers programming that strengthens third- to eighth-grade girls’ social, emotional, physical, and behavioral skills to successfully navigate life experiences, had more than 1,000 girls from ages 8 to 13 signed up this spring with 300 trained volunteer coaches ready to go.
The season usually concludes in a celebratory 5K event, which was scheduled to be held at UMass. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Girls on the Run Western Mass. will host a virtual 5K where participants will complete runs on their own, in their own location, and in their own amount of time.
The 5K will be completed between June 5-7, and runners will choose the time and place while following social distancing guidelines to walk, run or roll at 5K.
All participants will receive a training guide, physical activity sheets, a digital No. 1 bib, a finisher’s certificate and a fifth anniversary medal. Registration for community members is open now on the website (www.girlsontherunwesternma.org).
Suchanek tourney canceled
Organizers confirmed that the annual Tom Suchanek Baseball Classic Scholarship/Athletic Golf Outing has been canceled for 2020.
The tournament had been scheduled for June 27 at the Country Club of Greenfield.
“After much deliberation it is with great disappointment that Tom and I have decided to cancel the 2020 Suchanek Golf Classic,” Vinnie Melendez wrote in an email. “With the current pandemic situation there were just too many uncertainties.”
