SOUTH DEERFIELD — The Frontier Regional and Union 38 school districts have implemented Continuing Learning Plans to help students through a statewide closure caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.
Superintendent Darius Modestow held video conferences with staff on Wednesday, all while wearing a pair of loudly patriotic shorts to keep the mood light.
Teachers, related service providers, instructional assistants and building principals logged in from home to get updates on the schools’ food distribution initiative, the sanitation of school buildings, ways to stay connected with each other and the rollout of home-learning activities for students. Modestow stressed the importance of checking in with families to see how everyone is faring and making sure children have access to technology at home.
Modestow said teachers started reaching out to each of their students and families on Wednesday.
“The learning experiences that you offer to your students cannot replace your dynamic classroom instruction or the face-to-face interactions students have with you and their classmates,” Modestow told staff. “We are not trying to replicate the school day; rather, we are providing access to educational resources and activities.”
The school districts consist of Deerfield, Sunderland and Whately elementary schools, Conway Grammar School and Frontier Regional School.
