TURNERS FALLS — The United Arc’s “Be Counted — Census 2020” initiative became the theme of this year’s Coffee & Conversation event earlier this month, with legislators, business leaders and community members coming together to discuss the importance of census participation.
Typically, the annual Coffee & Conversation event is a chance for attendees to learn more about individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities that The United Arc serves in Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden and Worcester counties, and to foster community inclusion, according to a press release from the Turners Falls-based nonprofit.
As part of the “Be Counted — Census 2020” initiative, six members of The United Arc community shared their stories of being counted, or not being counted.
State Sen. Adam Hinds, Rep. Natalie Blais, Rep. Paul Mark’s aide Chris Cappucci and Rep. Susannah Whipps’ aide Rachel McMahon attended the event and shared their thoughts on the 2020 census, stressing how critical it is that every resident in Western Massachusetts participate in the census to ensure appropriate federal and state funding for programs and services, the release states.
In attendance from the Department of Developmental Services’ Franklin/Hampshire Area Office was Acting Director Keri Purcell, Assistant Director Angela-Nunez-Vasquez and Program Monitor Karen Ryan. Greenfield Savings Bank President and CEO John Howland, Heath New England Account Executive Kim Russo and Providers Council Vice President of Public
Policy and Development Bill Yelenak also attended.
The event was co-sponsored by the Greater Athol Area Advocates for Families with Special Needs. Refreshments were provided by 2nd Street Baking Co. and Food City, both in Turners Falls.
