In a My Turn on March 11, Patricia Hynes tries convince us that the protest of the logging in Wendell State Forest was an act of civil disobedience comparable to efforts to stop wars, end slavery, promote civil rights and allow voting by women.

The primary argument she makes in defense of the protest is that logging is a cause of climate change. However, there is no research showing that connection when logging is done in the context of long-term forest management carried out by forestry professionals. Therefore, this protest, which interfered with the work of a logging firm, which paid for the timber, is in no way “civil disobedience,” so the perpetrators should be punished to the full extent of the law.
