HAWLEY — The historical society, The Sons and Daughters of Hawley, is hosting its annual Illumination Party on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Meetinghouse, located at the intersection of East Hawley, Buckland and Plainfield roads.
The Illumination Party is a fun event that provides physical lightening and an emotional boost, according to Beth Thwing, a Hawley resident who has attended past Illumination parties.
“We light the oil lantern, which is a huge piece that hangs from the center of the ceiling in the sanctuary,” Thwing said. “It’s really just a warm glow that is touching for all of us.
“We also put candles with batteries in all of the windows and they stay there through out the winter season until the batteries wear out in the spring,” she added. “It’s kind of a nice, welcoming vista for people to see as they’re driving into the center of town.”
Attendees will sing carols, eat holiday treats, and drink hot chocolate.
“Sometimes it’s something a little stronger, depending on who (brings it),” Thwing said with a laugh.
The Sons and Daughters of Hawley asks that attendees consider bringing treats or beverages to share.
“Bundle up,” was advice given by Thwing’s husband, Kirby “Lark” Thwing, a years-long member with Sons and Daughters of Hawley, who noted that the Meetinghouse isn’t heated.
