Because of the nature of the Safe City Ordinance, I had to find the strength and courage to write this letter to the citizens of Greenfield: I am a grandmother, a former town councilor, and a nurse.

As a grandmother, I care about a future for my children and grandchildren As a former councilor, I know that the council’s actions affect the daily lives of its people.

As a nurse, I value caring for others. I also know that to do that successfully, I have to take care of myself first. The same applies to our city. As a lifetime resident of Greenfield, I have watched the downtown change with obvious challenges to continue as a vital economic county seat. I see many people on the street who appear to need help. I am also sensitive to the difficulties in these times, for young families and elders to have lives that work. I question how our city can deliver a life people are being promised.

I went to the John Zon Community Center to hear a first-hand account from a public official of the reality of living in his Safe City environment. I was truly alarmed by two things: First; his detailed description of consequences in his, “Safe City”; second; by the level of hostility shown by many of the demonstrators.

Clearly the Safe City Ordinance is a charge for people to take to heart the reality of this vote.

If people genuinely want to help others, there are many proven ways to do so.

Safe City fails to be one of them and I stand opposed.
