Emily DeMaio scored a pair of goals, and the Frontier Regional School field hockey team captured the Valley League championship outright thanks to a 2-2 tie with South Hadley, Thursday afternoon in South Hadley.

It’s the second league title in three years for Frontier (11-2-1, 6-0-1), which looks to close out an unbeaten Valley League run on Saturday against East Longmeadow.

“Winning the league is a testament to the hard work and effort that they have put in every day since the beginning of the season,” Frontier head coach Missy Mahar said of her squad.

DeMaio notched her second of the day with an assist from Rebecca Wallace-West with 11:21 remaining to give the Red Hawks a 2-1 advantage. South Hadley (8-5-1, 3-3-1) drew even with 5:23 to play however, when Bella Yee buried her second of the day to make it 2-2.

DeMaio’s first-half goal was assisted by Olivia Vecellio.

“It was nice to see Emily play aggressive in front of the net,” Mahar said. “She has the capability to do that and it was nice to see her bring it to this game.”

Frontier held a 10-6 edge in penalty corners and a 15-9 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper Skyla Burniske recorded seven saves for the Hawks.
