NORTHFIELD — A 39-year-old woman was airlifted from the Northfield Mountain Recreation & Environmental Center on Sunday afternoon after sustaining injuries in a fall from a rope swing over the Connecticut River.

Northfield Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell III said his department received an emergency call around 12:40 p.m. of a woman with substantial injuries after falling an estimated 20 feet near Munn’s Ferry campground. He did not know the victim’s name or where she lives, but said she was with family members at the time of the accident. Dunnell said the woman had at least a broken arm and potential injuries to her ribs.

Northfield EMS and fire and police departments responded, Dunnell said.

The chief said Bernardston firefighters Tim Snow and Jared Smith heard the emergency call while on a boat in the river and drove the vessel to the scene to transport EMTs to the injured woman.

The boat also brought the woman back to the dock on Munns Ferry Road, where she was brought to a landing zone set up to take her to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield via helicopter, Dunnell said.

“It was a cooperative, collaborative effort,” he said.

Dunnell said the woman’s family made the right decision by calling 911 and not moving her after she was injured.
