The Greenfield Grizzlies 12U softball team capped off its regular season Friday with a 16-3 victory over the Agawam Sharks in five innings. 

The Grizzlies enter the playoffs with a 9-3 record in the Suburban League. 

Ellis Benitez pitched the whole game for Greenfield, with 13 of her 15 outs recorded being strikeouts. 

Nina Holden and Mackenzie Paulin had big games at the plate, with both batters knocking in three RBIs. Paulin had two hits and Holden had a trio of singles. 

Anna Bucala, Eva Ferreira and Margarette Howland each had a hit and an RBI for the Grizzlies while Benitez, Amelia Pierce and Stella Verlander each had RBIs. 

Golf

Ouimet Memorial

South Deerfield’s Jacob Zaranek closed strong, carding a 1-over round of 72 to earn a top-10 finish at the 52nd Ouimet Memorial Tournament at Woodland Golf Club in Auburndale on Friday.

Zaranek had one birdie and two bogeys on his card, finishing off a three-round total of 6-over 219 that put him in a tie for ninth place overall.

Matthew Organisak captured the championship by one stroke, finishing off his tournament with a 72 on Friday to wind up 3-under 210. Three golfers (Jack Boulger, Nicholas Cummins and Brett Krekorian) tied for second at 2-under 211.

Baseball

Babe Ruth 

The Franklin County Babe Ruth League is hosting its August monthly meeting Tuesday, Aug. 6 beginning at 6:30 at Saint Kazimierz in Turners Falls. Enter through the front door to the first floor conference room. Topics include end of regular season, fall baseball signup dates, college scholarship applications and any subject brought up for discussion. Valley Storm tryouts

Tryouts for the 2020 season of the Valley Storm softball team will be held at Merritt Field at Sunderland Elementary School Aug. 7-9.

Each tryout is from 6-8 p.m. for all players/ages. It is not required you attend every tryout date, but strongly encouraged for accurate evaluations. The 2020 Season will host 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U teams. Come check out our family and see what we’re about.

Youth basketball

DRIVE Leagues

Behind 15 points from Brandon Prock and eight points from Gavin Gammell, the Raptos captured the DRIVE League boys middle school championship with a 54-34 win over Greenfield on Thursday night in Northfield.

Jacob Blanchard led Greenfield with eight points and Jackson Campbell added seven.

• In the JV title game, Brandon Harris poured in 20 points to lift South Hadley past Northampton, 55-53, in triple overtime.

Northampton’s Kelvin Perez registered a game-high 31 points for his side.

• In Men’s League action on Thursday, Dan Donoghue scored 20 points and Malachi Roman followed with 16 to lift Bruso Computer Solutions past Maple Row Insurance, 69-51.

Tim Hoar led Maple Row with 22 points and Taylor McCloud added nine.

Montague 3-on-3 tourney

The Montague Parks and Recreation Department is holding its second annual 3-on-3 youth basketball tournament Aug. 10 at Unity Park in Turners Falls.

The tournament will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is organized by NextUp basketball coordinator Josh Morse. All proceeds go toward sustaining the basketball courts for the area youth. 

The event is open to anyone 18 years or younger, with teams of four split into four divisions: Varsity, JV, 14U and 12U.

Signup is $40 per team, and the tournament will feature championship prizes and trophies, a four game guarantee, food and refreshment.

Shelburne Falls results

Erich Price captured both the men’s high single and high triple to pace the Thursday Night League at the Shelburne Falls Bowling Alley.

Price’s 122 was good enough for high single honors, and amassed a 309 to take the high triple.

Karen Herzog was the women’s high single winner at 124, while Jen Tobey was the high triple winner at 324.

Tennis 

GTA

The Greenfield Tennis Association is holding a Mixed Doubles tennis event Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Beacon Field courts starting at 9 a.m.  The entry fee is 5 dollars per team for members and 10 dollars for non-members.  All fees go to maintaining Greenfield’s clay tennis courts.  Please bring an unopened can of tennis balls.  Format will depend on the number of teams. Swimming 

Montague mini-camp

The competitive style mini-camp takes place Aug. 12-15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Turners Falls High School pool.

The camp has a competitive swimming approach, and is not a learn-to-swim program. Participants should be somewhat knowledgeable of all strokes and wish to broaden those skills for competitive team swimming. The cost is $45 per swimmer for Montague residents and $50 for non-residents.

Soccer

CVSOA course

The Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association will conduct an instructional course for new referees in August.

Members of the CVSOA referee scholastic soccer matches in Hampshire and Franklin Counties during September, October and November.

CVSOA members must be 18 years of age or older and pass a criminal background review.
