It was a memorable season for the Mahar Regional boys basketball team at the Monty Tech Summer League. 

The Senators ended their campaign with a 47-44 loss to Oakmont High School on Tuesday.

The loss didn’t matter to the Senators (10-1), who claimed the Monty Tech varsity championship with the league’s best record.

There are no playoffs at Monty Tech. The trophy was there for the Senators even before the game began against the Spartans.

Charlie Barnes scored 16 points for the Senators with four steals. Barnes hit four 3-pointers with three coming in the first half.

Mahar trailed the Spartans by eight points late in the second half but went on a 10-0 run to take the lead.

Oakmont responded with a run of its own to close out Mahar.

Aden Santana had a strong game for the Senators, especially in the second half, finishing with 10 points and four rebounds to go with a steal and two blocks.

Jake Tenney had seven points for Mahar.

The Athol High School summer league team lost to host Monty Tech, 47-27, on Tuesday to close out its season.

Bryce King scored 10 points for the Red Raiders with two steals.

Nick Bousquet finished with six points, with Noah Pottinger adding five rebounds.  

Canoe Racing 

Greenfield’s Karen Pleasant competed in the AuSable Canoe Marathon in Grayling, Mich., this past weekend, finishing with a time of 17:20:21, good for 65th place out of 81 competitors. 

Eight racers didn’t complete the race due to injury or illness. 

This was the sixth time Pleasant has traveled out to Michigan for the AuSable race, completing the entirety of the race each time. She had last competed in 2010. 

Golf

Junior PGA

South Deerfield’s Jonathan Elkins finished eight-over par in the first round of the 44th  Boys Junior PGA Championship at the Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford, Conn., Tuesday. 

Sitting in 141st place, Elkins will need a big day two to continue on in the tournament, with the projected cut being at par. 

Elkins will tee off the second round of the tournament today at 12:10 p.m. 

CCG

Liz Dolby’s score of 34 gave her the highest gross score in the A-Flight in a best nine scores game at the Country Club of Greenfield, Tuesday. 

Jane Plumley had the high net score of 23.5. 

In the B-Flight, Anne McHugh had the top gross score of 39 and Irene McDonald had the top net of 22.5. 

Thomas Memorial 

Fred Llewelyn finished with the low gross (37) in the Matt’s Men’s League at the Thomas Memorial Course, Tuesday. 

Barry Picard’s 29 was the low net score on the day. 

Charlie McCracken was closest to the pin on hole seven (four feet, one inch) and Llewelyn won closest to the pin on hole nine (seven feet, six inches). 

The duos of Matt Betsold and Picard and Wayne DeGrenier and Andy Wyngowski each earned five points, the most on the day. 

Llewelyn and Ken Adams both won skins. 

Edge Hill

Mark Eaton’s plus-6 gave him the top point quota in the A-Division of the men’s league at the Edge Hill Golf Course, Tuesday. 

Eaton also had the low gross score of 35, while Matt Vandale finished with the low net score of 31. 

Daniel Herlocker was closest to the pin on hole 16 (14 feet, four inches). 

In the B-Division, Butch Whitson had the top point quota (plus-4.5) and low gross score (43). 

Jon Sonntag had the low net with a score of 34 and Ship Heddens won closest to the pin on hole 16 (14 feet, nine inches). 

Softball

Suburban League

Brielle Widelo pitched a complete game in the 14U Greenfield Grizzlies 16-3 win over West Springfield at Murphy Park, Tuesday. 

Widelo helped herself at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring a trio of runs. 

Rachel Dodge was 3-for-4 with a double and home run. She scored three runs and knocked in five RBIs while Sophia Holden had three hits, one a triple, and scored two runs. 

Monday at Murphy Park, Greenfield defeated Turners Falls, 19-16. 

Kait Trudeau was 2-for-3, Hailey Haughey had a hit, was walked four times and scored three runs and Paddie Broady was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. 

Co-Rec

Fairview Landscapes defeated the Sharks, 14-2 in a Montague Co-Rec softball game at Unity Park, Tuesday. 

Tim Anderson led the way for Fairview with four hits, three of which were doubles. Tyler Anderson and Dustin Olsen each had three hits. 

Mike Cole, Jeff Gibson and Kelsey Cadran each hit safely in the loss. 

• Tyler Woodard had a home run, two doubles and a single in Smitty’s Pub’s 20-6 defeat of Hubie’s Tavern in a Greenfield slow pitch softball game at Hillside, Tuesday. 

Christian Oulette added four htis and Ryan Bernard was 5-for-6 with a triple in the winning effort. 

For Hubie’s, Nick Aldrich was 3-for-4, finishing a home run away from the cycle, and Ed Morley hit a triple. 

• Beck’s Auto defeated Business and Pleasure, 24-12, in a Greenfield Co-Rec game at Green River Tuesday behind Adam Bastarache hitting for the cycle and scoring five runs.

Scott Curtis was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and five RBIs, Kelly Sadler had three hits, one a triple, and knocked in six runs and Jeff Guy was a single away from the cycle. 

For Business and Pleasure, Josh Lashway hit a three run home run, hitting it into the woods. 

Basketball

DRIVE League

Tyler Rogers and Quinn Grover each scored 10 points to lead Keene over Frontier in the boys varsity championship game at Pioneer, Monday. 

Gabe Gochinski scored nine points in the loss. 

• In a boys middle school playoff play-in game at Pioneer, Monday, Northfield defeated Hampshire, 36-29, behind 15 points from Jake Brook. 

John Goodnow led Hampshire with 10. 

• Frontier defeated Greenfield in the boys 5th and 6th grade championship game at Pioneer, 39-24, with Teddy Cyr leading the way with 21 points. 

Grayson Thomas scored 17 points and Isiah Rodriguez added 11 points in the loss. 

In the consolation game, Trace Tetrault’s 11 points pushed Hinsdale past Bernardston, 39-24. 

Kainen Stevens was the leading scorer for Bernardston with 12 points. 

Tennis 

GTA

The Greenfield Tennis Association is holding a Mixed Doubles tennis event Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Beacon Field courts starting at 9 a.m.  The entry fee is 5 dollars per team for members and 10 dollars for non-members.  All fees go to maintaining Greenfield’s clay tennis courts.  Please bring an unopened can of tennis balls.  Format will depend on the number of teams.  If you’d like to play, please notify Brian at bclamore@gmail.com.

Swimming 

Montague mini-camp

The competitive style mini-camp takes place Aug. 12-15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Turners Falls High School pool.

The camp has a competitive swimming approach, and is not a learn-to-swim program. Participants should be somewhat knowledgeable of all strokes and wish to broaden those skills for competitive team swimming. The cost is $45 per swimmer for Montague residents and $50 for non-residents.

Soccer

Four Rivers seeks coach

Four Rivers Charter School is seeking a girls varsity soccer coach for the upcoming fall season.

The school is looking for a qualified candidate who knows and understands soccer, has a positive attitude, loves to coach and loves working with teenagers. All interested candidates, please contact Athletic Director Amanda McNamara at amcnamara@frcps.org.

CVSOA course

The Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association will conduct an instructional course for new referees in August.

Members of the CVSOA referee scholastic soccer matches in Hampshire and Franklin Counties during September, October and November.

CVSOA members must be 18 years of age or older and pass a criminal background review.
