The Greeenfield 12U baseball All-Stars closed their season on the right note. 

Taking on the Eastampton 12U AAU Eagles in a doubleheader, Sunday, Greenfield came away with a 12-3 win in game one, and won game two, 16-4, the team’s last game of the summer.  

In game one, Caleb Thomas and Hugh Cyhowski each pitched three innings, striking out a combined six batters, surrendering just three hits and giving up no walks. 

At the plate, Cyhowski was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Ethan Quinn hit a pair of doubles and brought in three runs, Caleb Thomas had two hits and a trio of RBIs and Cam Burnett and Jackson Campbell each had tow hits and an RBI in the win. 

Jake Brook added an RBI double, Evan Tispenyuk had a hit and scored two runs, Braeden Tispenyuk and Devin Dubie each had a hit and a run and Rowan Muzzy added a hit. 

In game two, Braeden Tispenyuk, Campbell and Quinn combined to strike out nine, each pitching two innings. 

Four players had three hits for Greenfield, as Dubie (three RBIs), Campbell (two RBIs), Quinn (RBI) and Thomas (two runs scored) all hit safely on three occassions. 

Cyhowski and Evan Tispenyuk each had two hits and three RBIs, Braeden Tispenyuk had a hit and a pair of RBIs, Silas Muzzy had a hit and an RBI, Rowan Muzzy had a hit and scored a run and Burnett scored three runs and had an RBI. 

Football

Holyoke Passing League

The Athol High School football team split a pair of games at Holyoke High School at Excel Sports Academy’s 7-on-7 passing league on Monday.

The Red Raiders opened with a 14-6 loss to South Hadley.

Riley Paine went 4-for-10 for 60 yards with a touchdown and an interception against the Tigers.

Keegan Lutz was the recipient of a 32-yard strike from Paine. Lutz went high to make the catch, and came down to the turf in the end zone with simultaneous possession with the defender.

Derek Erali had a 12-yard catch for Athol

In the quick turnaround, Athol defeated Northampton 26-6.

Paine went 7-for-10 for 110 yards against the Blue Devils, throwing three touchdowns.

Lutz caught the first touchdown from five-yards out and added a 29-yard score later in the game. A Jacob Smith 17-yard score in traffic gave the Red Raiders a 12-0 lead.

Lutz came into the game at quarterback and got the Red Raiders into the end zone on two snaps. The first was a 17-yard connection to Smith before a 23-yard throw to Paine for a touchdown.

Robbie Day had a 15-yard catch against Northampton.

On defense, Erali had an interception for Athol (7-3) while Caleb Cox broke up three passes. 

Softball

Co-Rec

Josh Johnson’s grand slam and five RBIs pushed the Hangar Pub and Grill past Concord Optical, 15-14, Monday at Greenfield Middle School. 

Joe Guidaboni had three hits, just missing a triple from hitting for the cycle. Walter Perry had four hits and three RBIs, Vinny Natale had three hits and Matt Welcome and Mike Cole each had a pair of hits in the win. 

For Concord Optical, Tom Wiles had four hits, and like Guidaboni, was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. 

Brad Barrett had three hits, two of which were doubles. 

Basketball

DRIVE League

Team No Name defeated Team DRIVE, 84-79, in overtime in the men’s league at Pioneer, Sunday. 

Candon Rusin led Team No Name with 25 points and Ben Johnson chipped in another 20 points. Angelo Thomas scored 26 point sand Rob Jones added 24 points in the loss. 

Tucker Llewelyn’s 33 points propelled Beck’s Auto past Markol Strong, 86-66. 

Garrett Cote scored 27 points for Beck’s Auto while Matt Gibson had 29 points and Jaylen Sanders had 11 points for Markol Strong. 

Ian Fulton-Black scored 24 points and Torsten Sloan-Anderson chipped in 16 points himself in VT Hoops 83-72 defeat of Bruso Computer Solutions. 

Malachi Roman and Parker Hickey combined for 38 points in the loss. 

Golf 

Congregational Church Golf Tournament 

The third annual Trinitarian Congregational Church Golf tournament was held at the Northfield Golf Course July 13, with the team of Brad Stafford, Shane Foster, Delia Shean and Camilla Thatcher taking first place with a score of 58. 

Matt Dean, Brian Dean, Jack Letourneau and Lloyd Grover took second, Doug Link, Alison Lucey, Ann Pickerell and Doug Reed took third, Dwayne Fowler Shaw, Dimitri Leristis, Bill Daley and Bill Emery were fourth and Jeff Newton, Craig Herdiegh, Jessie Edwards and Jeff Poirier took fifth. 

Thatcher had the ladies longest drive and the men’s longest drive was won by Scott Bennet. 

Thatcher also won closest to the pin on the ladies side and Grover won it on the men’s side. 

Auto racing

Monadnock Speedway

In the first 25-lap Late Model Sportsman Division at Monadnock Speedway over the weekend, it took Vernon’s Solomon Brow six laps to take the lead and roll into victory lane, tying Pete Fiandaca. Tyler Leary of Hatfield collected second place with Orange’s Cole Littlewood running a close third.

The stage was set for round two and a new record. Over the first 20 laps, it looked as though Brow’s string was about to be cut. Justin Littlewood of Orange led from Lap 2, but Brow captured the win with Littlewood taking second. Greenfield Ben Byrne was the runner-up with Whately’s Joel Monahan taking third.

In the 15-lap Young Gun feature, Whately’s Jake Puchalski added to his win total of five with his third straight win.

Swimming 

Montague mini-camp

The competitive style mini-camp takes place Aug. 12-15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Turners Falls High School pool.

The camp has a competitive swimming approach, and is not a learn-to-swim program. Participants should be somewhat knowledgeable of all strokes and wish to broaden those skills for competitive team swimming. The cost is $45 per swimmer for Montague residents and $50 for non-residents.

Soccer

Four Rivers seeks coach

Four Rivers Charter School is seeking a girls varsity soccer coach for the upcoming fall season.

The school is looking for a qualified candidate who knows and understands soccer, has a positive attitude, loves to coach and loves working with teenagers. All interested candidates, please contact Athletic Director Amanda McNamara at amcnamara@frcps.org.

CVSOA course

The Connecticut Valley Soccer Officials Association will conduct an instructional course for new referees in August.

Members of the CVSOA referee scholastic soccer matches in Hampshire and Franklin Counties during September, October and November.

CVSOA members must be 18 years of age or older and pass a criminal background review.
