The Suburban League 12U All-Star Game was played Tuesday at Murphy Park in Greenfield, with the North defeating the South, 13-3. 

Mackenzie Paulin and Ashley Taylor each pitched two innings for the North squad, with Paulin striking out five to Taylor’s four. 

Mel Ring pitched an inning, striking out two, and Ellis Benitez pitched two innings, finishing with one strikeout. 

Margarette Howland hit an RBI triple for the North team, and Taylor had two hits and an RBI. 

Anna Bucala, Paulin and Delaney Fifield each had a hit and an RBI, Kelly Baird hit safely and Ring had an RBI in the win. 

In the skills competitions, Frontier Red took first in baserunning, with a team consisting of Taylor, Lila Montminy, Ariana Miller and Maggie Potter. 

The Greenfield Grizzlies won the fielding and throwing with Bucala, Paulin, Howland, Baird, Benitez and Amelia Pierce competing. 

Howland won the home run derby, smashing 10 homers.

18U

The Valley Storm 18U softball team placed tied for fifth at the 2019 USSSA Annie 99 Olender Memorial Tournament in Southington, Conn., this past weekend, finishing with a 2-2 record. 

Rachel Rooney had five hits, one a double, and an RBI on the weekend. Kathryn Hioe had a single, double and seven RBIs and Megan Healy had three singles and a double. 

Julia Gauvin had a double, a home run and a pair of RBIs for Valley Storm, Courtney Dunham finished with a single, two doubles and three RBIs, Mandy Fuller and Brandi Worcester each had two RBIs and a single, Hailey Bogusz had two singles, a triple and batted in a run and Michelle Mcdermott had a single. 

Co-Rec

Sam Parker hit three home runs in Bath Fitters 26-2 win over Concord Opticals, Tuesday, in a Greenfield Co-Rec softball game. 

Matt Luippold hit a pair of homers in the win while Tim Anderson added a home run of his own. 

Eric Boliski had a home run for Concord Opticals in the loss. 

• Kyle Bergmann hits for the cycle, going 6-for-6 in the Montague Elks 34-1 win over Riff’s North. 

Doug Porter was 4-for-5 and Melissa Lumbis finished 4-for-6 in the win. 

Matt Orell and Morghan Orell both had hits for Riff’s North. 

PVWS

Rachel Sheehan’s two hits, one a home run, and four RBIs led Ashfield past Shelburne, 8-7, in a Pioneer Valley Women’s Softball game, Tuesday. 

Taylor Boutwell had three hits and a trio of RBIs for Ashfield while Shari McCarthy had a hit and the game-winning RBI. 

Baseball

Babe Ruth

Turners Falls Athletic Club defeated Parody Builders and Son, 6-1, in a playoff game Tuesday to advance to the championship game, which will take place on Saturday. 

Smitty’s Pub and Parody’s will square off Thursday, with the winner playing TFAC in the championship. 

With it being a double-elimination tournament, and Turners being unbeaten, the winner of Thursday’s game would have to beat TFAC twice to win the championship. 

Turners scored five runs in the bottom of the third to get ahead of Parody Builders, with Sam Knight driving in a pair of runs with a single and Gillis MacDougall driving in two more runners with a single of his own. 

Chad Adams singled in an insurance run in the sixth. 

Knight went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the game, while Will Ainsworth, Mike Pierce and Noah Univinus all singled in the win. 

Jordan Hunt was 2-for-3 with an RBI and T.J. Thiabault had a single in the loss. 

MacDougall pitched five and a third for TFAC, giving up four hits and striking out 12. Tyler Cusson pitched the final inning and two thirds to pick up the save, striking out three on the way. 

Golf

New England Amateur

South Deerfield’s Jacob Zaranek shot an even-par round of 72, good enough for a tie for 12th place after Day 1 of the 90th New England Amateur Championship held at The Quechee Club (Vt.) on Tuesday.

Zaranek recorded two birdies and two bogeys in his round, and he trails first-round leader Charlie Dubiel of Old Sandwich Golf Club by five strokes after Dubiel shot a 5-under 67.

Conway’s Nathan Patterson was just one shot back of Zaranek, as his 1-over 73 has him in a tie for 19th place following 18 holes.

Country Club of Greenfield’s Connor Piecuch is tied for 114th after his 9-over 81 on Tuesday.

Round 2 continues today.

Edge Hill Men’s League

Lewis Goodnow’s point quota of plus-5 gave him a first place finish in the A Division in the men’s league at the Edge Hill Golf Course, Tuesday. 

Goodnow was the first half winner with 15.5 points and had the lowest gross with 37. 

Dave Cote had the low net score of 32 and Phil Sherburne won closest to the pin on hole eight, with his shot landing 10 feet, 10 inches away. 

In the B Division, Bret Bourman won point quota (9.5), low gross (40) and closest to the pin on hole eight (13 feet, two inches). 

Paul Champigny had the low net of 33 and Jon Sonntag was the first half winner with 18.5 points. 

Thomas Memorial

Charlie McCracken’s score of 37 was the low gross in Matt’s Men’s League at the Thomas Memorial Club in Turners Falls, Tuesday. 

Alfie Mitchell had the low net with a 25, while Mike Earl and Mark Snyder both gained six points, the most on the day. 

Wendell Barton was closest to pin seven and Rob Broussard won closest to the pin on hole nine. 

McCracken, Jon Snow and Rick Kimball each won skins.      

Basketball

Keene Summer League

The Mahar girls summer league team lost to Fall Mountain, 48-36, on Tuesday in Keene, N.H.

Delaney Parker led the Senators with 10 points, five steals and three assists.

The Senators stayed close in the first half but a hot-shooting Fall Mountain team pulled away in the second half.

Haylee Allen scored eight points for Mahar.

Micalyn Mailloux got going in the second half and finished with eight points and three steals.

Mailloux had steals on consecutive possession for the Senators and her foul shot cut the lead to 35-28 before Fall Mountain extended the lead.

Courtney Page added sevens points with seven rebounds.

Natalie Belloli’s nine points and five rebounds led the Mahar junior varsity team to a 27-12 win over Pioneer Valley Regional on Tuesday in the upstairs gym at Keene High School.

Emma Bacigalupo chipped in with seven points (eight rebounds) for Mahar while Kendrah Doane grabbed 10 rebounds with six points.

Monty Tech

Through nine games, the Mahar boys summer league team is still unbeaten after a 32-15 win over Gardner on Tuesday in Fitchburg.

Mahar got after it on defense in the second half, holding Gardner to five points.

Charlie Barnes (9-0) led Mahar with 15 points.

DRIVE League

Peter Carey’s 18 points and Adam Hernandez’ 12 pushed Frontier past Northampton, 57-50, in a boys varsity playoff game at Greenfield High School, Monday. 

• Greenfield squeaked past Hampshire, 53-47, behind 13 points from Henry Zwart and nine from Sam Gibson. 

Jack Forest led Hampshire with 12 points. 

In the boys middle school league at Pioneer Monday, Hugh Hart and Chan Min each scored nine points as Frontier defeated Hampshire, 41-28. 

Jason Connors had 14 points in the loss. 

• Jacob Blanchard and Jon Breor combined for 19 points to lead Greenfield past Northfield, 42-36. 

John Scagel scored 14 points for Northfield in the loss. 

In boys 5th and 6th grade action at Pioneer Monday, Greenfield topped Hinsdale, 34-25. 

Grayson Thomas scored 13 points and Isiah Ortiz added on nine points for Greenfield, while Caden Sheaver led Hinsdale with six points. 

Teddy Cyr’s 17 points helped Frontier defeat Bernardston, 40-12. 

Brody Girard and Kainin Stevens each scored four points in the losing effort.
