Kidleidoscope Fridays: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays. Come each week to learn about our wildlife neighbors who share our home in the Connecticut River Watershed. Kidleidoscope is a free child-friendly, hands-on environmental experience for young children. Bike Path BINGO: Saturday, May 25, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. All ages are welcome to practice examining the natural world with field guides, binoculars and a fun game to see just how much you can see. Meet at the center’s main entrance. Bring water, bug spray and sunscreen, and wear sturdy shoes. Free.
14th Annual Free Family Fishing Day: Saturday, June 1, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three locations:
■Barton Cove Campground — Barton Cove Road in Gill
Free fishing, with equipment provided. Limited supplies available; bring your own pole if you have it. No fishing license needed.
■Great Falls Discovery Center — 2 Avenue A in Turners Falls
Fly lure tying demonstrations, fly fishing casting demonstrations and fish viewing from the Silvio Conte Anadromous Fish Lab.
Turners Falls Fishway — 15 First St. in Turners Falls
Fish printing (the art of Gyotaku) from noon to 2 p.m.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. Event is held rain or shine. Parking is free at each site, or opt to ride the free Fish Bus shuttle between sites.
Northfield Mountain
“Migrating Fish, Mills and More”: Saturday, May 18, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Join staff from the Turners Falls Fishway for a free guided walk along the popular canalside trail and bike path. Learn about the amazing journeys of migratory fish as they travel upriver during their spring spawning run. Discover the history of the mills along the canal when Turners Falls was a paper and cutlery powerhouse. Meet at the picnic tables next to the entrance of the Turners Falls Fishway (15 1st St. in Turners Falls). Total length of the walk is less than 1 mile along flat terrain. All ages are welcome. Heavy rain cancels. No registration required.
Massachusetts Forest Alliance
Young Forest Bird Walk in Ashfield: Thursdays, May 16, May 30 and June 13, all from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Participants should wear long pants, long sleeves and boots suitable for wet conditions. Participants are encouraged to treat their clothing against ticks and bring bug spray. Because the re-growing forest has many stumps and abundant slash, a sturdy walking stick may be helpful. These walks will be cancelled in event of heavy rain. Participants should meet at the Taylor Forest entrance by the hydrant on Hawley Road just east of Old Stage Road. Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust
Volunteer Appreciation Picnic: Saturday, May 18, 11 a.m. to noon at the AMC Richardson-Zlogar Cabin at the end of Alexander Hill Road in Northfield. Food will be provided, but feel free to bring a side to share. Veteran Excursion: Saturday, May 25, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Alderbrook Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary, 835 Millers Falls Road (Route 63) in Northfield. Mount Grace is encouraging people with mobility challenges, veterans, families and community members to be part of recognizing this special property, its accessibility and the veterans who have served our country in recognition of Memorial Day. There will be a demonstration of the Freedom Chair initiative by the North Quabbin Trail Association, a guided nature tour, an address by the chairman of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Northfield Post, a moment of silence and a flag ceremony. Refreshments and lunch will be provided after the walk. Volunteers are also needed to help set up and clean up. Great American Campout: Saturday, June 15, at 1 p.m. through Sunday, June 16, at 10 a.m. at Dexter Park Innovation School, 3 Dexter St. in Orange.
