‘Pineapples to bananas’

In a recent My Turn, a woman who moved from Beverly to Greenfield in 2017 bashed my friend and local hero Albert Norman with the usual litany of complaints. She “sees nothing wrong with sprawl,” she finds Greenfield “an inconvenient place to live” for “lack of shopping options,” etc. She has not one nice thing to say about the place where she chose to relocate, but never mind. I write solely to correct her claims about real estate tax, a subject of perpetual disinformation. In comparing Beverly to Greenfield, she compares pineapples to bananas. Unlike Greenfield, Beverly has a split tax. This means that Beverly lowers its residential tax rates by imposing a higher rate on commercial properties.
