Pioneer Valley Regional School long-jumper Scott McDonough leads the local contingent of athletes in today’s MIAA Division 5 Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
The competition gets underway at 4:30 weather permitting.
McDonough is the top seed in the boys’ long jump after qualifying for the meet during the regular season with a mark of 21 feet, 9¼ inches. During Friday’s PVIAC Championships, McDonough leapt 20-8½ and placed fourth, so he will be looking to better that mark at the State meet. Two other jumpers at the meet have also eclipsed 21 feet this season.
Like McDonough, who is the only competitor from Pioneer, Meghan Davis is the lone Mohawk athlete attending, but she has her sights set on representing the school in a big way. Davis qualified for the 2-mile with a time of 11:15.80, making her the third seed in the event.
Athol has three participants including senior Mason Barrieau, who will compete in the 600 meter run (sixth seed) and the 55-meter hurdles (18th seed). Barrieau would like to bounce back in the 600 where he said he was disappointed to finish third at the PVIAC meet. He will need to shave four seconds off his time in order to beat the top seed in the event. Teammate and classmate Dennis St. Jean qualified for the 1,000 with a best time of 2:43.92 to seed him 12th. On the girl’s side, Athol sophomore Rashelly Dalmau-Gonzalez will throw in the shot put, qualifying in the 23rd spot. The Athol 4 x 800 and 4 x 400 relay teams also qualified.
Junior Crescens Iavorschi will represent Greenfield on the boys’ side after he qualified in three events — the 55-meter dash and 300 where he will be in the 14th position for both, and the long jump where he qualified 10th with a leap of 19-10½. Green Wave sophomore Victoria Marin will compete on the girls’ side in both the high jump (18th seed) and long jump (13th seed).
Mahar has four athletes competing, all on the girl’s side. Junior Kamryn Reilly will compete in the 55-meter dash, the high jump and the long jump. She is seeded seventh in the long jump, and is the No. 9 seed in both the 55 and the high jump. Seventh-grader Carra Fitzgerald continues her impressive first season in both the mile and two-mile. Fitzgerald qualified in the mile with a time of 5:34.67 (11th seed) and the two mile with a time of 12:01.90 (ninth seed). Senior Chloe Taddeo will compete in the shot put as the 15th seed, and Anna Wetherbee will compete in the long jump as the 17th seed.
