It was quite a weekend for the Deerfield Academy squash teams.
The Big Green fared quite well at the 2019 Head US High School National Championships, hosted by Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. Each of the school’s three teams (boys varsity, girls varsity, boys JV) played four matches in three days.
The boys varsity team went 3-1 overall, reaching the semifinals before falling to Brunswick, 7-0. That set up a third-place game against St. Paul’s School, where the Green captured a 6-1 victory.
The JV boys team took home the Division 3 championship, going a perfect 4-0 over the weekend and capping off its title with a 5-2 win over The Hill School in the finals. Deerfield captured wins over Horace Mann, Germantown Friends and Tabor to punch its ticket to the final.
The varsity girls team went 2-2 and took fourth place in the Division 1 field. The weekend began with wins over Penn Charter and Choate, before the Green fell to Greenwich, 6-1, in the semifinals. They closed with a 5-2 loss to Baldwin in the third-place game.
NMH’s Carroll hits 300th win
Behind an 18-points, 10-rebound double-double from Harvard-bound Chris Ledlum, Northfield Mount Hermon School gave coach John Carroll his 300th career victory behind an 82-41 win over Sweden’s BK RIG in action Sunday at the National Prep School Invitational.
NMH (23-4), which led 39-24 at halftime, received points from 12 different players in the win.
Michael Jankovich went for 14 points and seven boards, Greg Dolan added 10 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Max Lorca-Lloyd totaled 10 points, four rebounds and a pair of blocks.
The Hoggers get back to NEPSAC AAA league play when they travel to face St. Thomas More in a Wednesday afternoon affair.
Bantams edged
Despite goals from Eathon Bryant and Sam Knight, the Dillon Chevrolet and Gilmore & Farrell FCHA Bantam Green team lost to Brattleboro, 5-2, at Nelson Withington Arena in Brattleboro in Greater Springfield League North Division action, Sunday.
Hunter Smith assisted on a goal, and goalkeeper Trevor Parkinson made 27 saves in net.
• In action Saturday, Knight tallied both goals but the team fell to Ludlow, 5-2, at Smead Arena in Springfield.
MJ Paulin, Matt Provencal and Trevor Kuchieski added assists, and Parkinson turned away 33 shots in net.
FCHA Squirts win
Chase Zraunig buried a pair of goals, leading the FCHA Greenfield Savings Bank Squirt Green squad to a convincing 6-1 win over Westfield in GSL action Sunday at Amelia Park Arena in Westfield.
Shawn Baumann, Luca Siano, Caedmon Leblanc and Stefan Flaska all added goals in the victory, with assists coming from Carter Schloat (two), Braedon Talbot, Zraunig and Baumann.
Talbot, Flaska and Schloat were defensive stalwarts, with goalie Jay McGinnis making 12 saves.
Greenfield SL wins
Behind 11 points from Jerry Ven and 10 from Jackson Campbell, Greenfield powered past Northampton, 45-23, in a Suburban League grades 5 and 6 basketball game over the weekend.
Jekcim Ortiz added 2 points and paced Greenfield’s defensive effort.
