A Pan Am Railways freight train derailed off Farley Road in Wendell just before 3 a.m. Saturday, according to state and local officials.

Four of the six derailed cars overturned and one of the tank cars was filled with hydrochloric acid.  Evaluation of the car revealed no hazardous material leaks or reactions took place, according to State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and New Salem and Wendell Fire Chief Joe Cuneo. In a press statement issued afterward, they said that as a precaution, a Department of Fire Services Hazmat Team and Special Operations team responded to assist.

There were no evacuations nor was anyone threatened.

Wendell Fire Department was also assisted by Erving, Greenfield, and Turners Falls fire departments.
