GREENFIELD – A model of the energy-efficient homes being built on Deerfield Street is going to be shown off this weekend.
City officials and builders are unveiling the Green River Commons development this weekend, nearing the end of a years-long process to improve the area and build seven energy-efficient homes through the use of Community Development Block Grants.
One of the homes, located at 96 to 108 Deerfield St., will be shown during an open house on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m., said Greenfield’s Grant Administrator MJ Adams.
Adams said the units are “still in construction, but one unit is ready for model,” which will be showcased during the open house. Three units are expected to be completed by early July, with the rest being completed by mid-August, Melissa Caldwell, sales and marketing director from Wright Builders, the company building the homes, said.
The homes run along its namesake the Green River. They are close to downtown, less than a half-mile from the John Olver Transit Center on Olive Street, providing residents with nearby access to public transit.
The land for the homes was purchased by the city using Community Development Block Grant funding. The money is issued by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development to help improve areas of need in communities.
Other projects in the city that have used CDBG funding includes Lunt Field improvements and assessing Greenfield’s handicap accessibility.
The homes are modest in size, ranging from 560-square feet for one-bedroom homes and 780-square feet for two-bedroom homes.
In spite of the size, the homes were designed with open living areas, vaulted ceiling between 8 and 10 feet tall and sliding glass windows that open to a patio.
The homes are all equipped with Energy Star refrigerators, dishwashers and ranges.
Four of the homes are affordable housing options and three others that are market-rate, and all are available for purchase, Wanda Mooney, realtor from Coldwell-Banker Upton-Massamont Realtors, said.
Mooney said there are people interested but “they want to see them completed, see what they look like” before they purchase them.
