Saturday was a good day for Greenfield Post 81.
The American Legion Baseball Senior Division team got great pitching performances in two games to earn a sweep of a doubleheader as it defeated both Ludlow (11-3) and Monson (6-0) on the road.
Post 81 (4-0) began the day in Ludlow, where it unleased a 13-hit attack and scored 11 runs in support of three pitchers who combined on a four-hitter. Eliot Mousseau struck out three and walked one in three innings and left with a 5-3 lead before Owen Phelps and Sam Bobala came on to pitch two innings of scoreless relief each. Phelps struck out one and did not walk a batter, while Bobala struck out three and walked one.
Luke Viens had three hits and one RBI for Post 81, while Connor Waitkus had two hits and an RBI. Jacob Bryant singled and doubled, Colin Cloutier doubled and drove in a run, and Kalen Evans and Jake Suhl had one hit and two RBIs apiece.
Greenfield then headed to Monson for a nightcap and Ben Arnold pitched five shutout innings of one-hit ball to help lead Post 81 to a 6-0 victory.
Joel Peabody and Adam Hallenbeck each pitched one inning of scoreless relief to complete the shutout, Peabody striking out two and Hallenbeck one.
Max Charest tripled and drove in a run, while Kiernan Freeman doubled and plated a run. Waitkus had three hits and one RBI, and Bryant had two hits and one RBI.
“It was a long day, but it was a good day to bring the team together,” Post 81 coach Kyle Phelps said. “We will find out more about our team this week because the schedule gets much tougher.”
Post 81 heads to Aldenville (5-1) Tuesday night at 7.

Hugh Cyhowski belted a solo home run and Smitty’s Pub locked up first place overall in the regular season Saturday with an 8-6 victory over New Fortune Restaurant in a Greenfield Minor League Major Division baseball game in Greenfield.
Smitty’s will be the top seed when the Major Division playoffs begin Wednesday evening, facing Gilmore & Farrell Insurance.
Aaron Morrissey had one hit and two RBIs in the win, and Brayden Thayer had two hits. George Mercorelli, Aiden Bailey and Jonathan Breor each chipped in a hit.
Michael Pierce, Daniel Pena-Chadee and Cyhowski combined for nine strikeouts in the win.
Nico Fasulo had two hits and scored twice for New Fortune. Cody Hougton and Ethan Quinn each had a hit and two RBIs, and Braeden Tsipenyuk each had a hit.
Matt Houghton, Quinn and Fasulo struck out 10 in the loss.
• Also Saturday, Jackson Petrin, Jake Petrin, Devin Sloan, Dylan Gagnon and Mikey Cyhowski each had two hits as Gilmore and Farrell defeated Maniatty’s, 17-5,
Bryce Avery doubled and also struck out five to earn the win.
Matt Lavoine and Ethan Mauthe each doubled for Maniatty’s, and Devin Dubie, William Ainsworth and Cam Burnett each singled.
• In Saturday AAA action, Chase Zraunig had three hits and two RBIs to help Freedom Credit Union outslug Nap’s Auto Sales & Service, 15-12.
Elias Urquhart and Noah Waterman each had two hits in the win, while Slias Muzzy struck out seven in four innings of relief to earn the win.
George Gutierrez had three hits for Nap’s, while Malik Moore doubled and singled, and Bobby Ellis had two hits. Jackson Silva doubled, and Jonathan Ainsworth and Desmond Drake each had a hit.
• On Friday, Jackson Petrin tripled and singled and Zraunig doubled and singled as Freedom Credit Union outlasted Tognarelli Plumbing and Heating, 19-15.
Hannah Gilbert had two hits in the win. Russell Herbert added one hit. Waterman and Urquhart pitched well.
Levi Halla had three hits, including a double, while Hayden Girard had two doubles. Kolin Broderick singled and tripled, and Aaron Morrissey singled and doubled. Rylin Koschinski and Tristan James each had a hit.
Babe Ruth
Luc Belheumer went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and five runs scored and Parody Builders beat Smitty’s Pub, 22-15, in a Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League game Saturday at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield.
Ben Johnston and Aidan Roche each scored three times in the win, and Liam Skribiski-Banack pitched well in relief to earn the win.
Ian Simpson had three hits and drove in three runs for Smitty’s. Miles Ferreira had three hits and one RBI, and Kevin Reil played well defensively in the outfield.
• Also, TJ Thibeault struck out 12 in five innings of relief and Akey’s Insurance came back from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Smitty’s Pub, 10-4.
Thibeault went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the offense in the win. Jake Perkins went 2-for-2 and scored three runs, and Chad Adams and Joe Monkiewicz each had two hits and two RBIs.
Iain Simpson went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss. Jivason Reil had one hit and one RBI, and Austin Wrisley pitched well in defeat.
Sandy Koufax
Gehrig Brynda doubled, singled and drove in two runs and Frontier-Alber Hearing Services defeated Pioneer Stone Seals, 16-2, in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Sandy Koufax game at Franklin County Technical School in Turners Falls.
Kevin Baumann doubled and drove in two runs in the win, and Aidan Falla had two hits and one RBI. Tom Alber singled and drove in a run, and Kyle Barnes had two RBIs. Dylan Martin, Tyler Baranoski and Sean Kirkendall each drove in a run. Max Edwards earned the win.
• On Saturday, Baumann had three hits and two RBIs but Alber Hearing fell to Amherst, 6-5, in nine innings in Amherst.
Kyle Barnes singled and doubled for Alber, while Edwards had two hits and two RBIs. Matt Como had two hits, Ben Zaranek had two singles and a double, and Tom Alber drove in a run.
Phyllis Canon Invitational
Terry Boyce and Katie Vitello shot a 68 to win low gross during the Phyllis Canon Invitational at the Country Club of Greenfield over the weekend.
Michelle Morgan and Sue Plante tied Sue McClellan and Cindy Lajzer each shot a 72 to tie for second. Liz Dolby and Liz Archer finished fourth at 74.
Kim French and Karen Duclos tied Jodi Hoynoski and Jill Waldron for low net with a 56. Michelle Hazlett and Irene McDonald took third with a 58, while Sally Roberts and Julie Schonbrun tied Irene Woods and Jane Plumley for fourth with a 59.
Muehlberg ace
Greenfield’s Doug Muehlberg aced the 140-yard, 15th hole at the Country Club of Greenfield on Sunday.
Muehlberg used a 6-iron and the feat was witnessed by Kevin O’Connell, Dan Gavin and Matt Pitoniak.
Suchanek Outing
Shelby Smith, Dan Smith, Brodie Conant and Sandy Conant tied Jason Liimatainen, Kevin Shea, Eric Adams and Garrett Cousineau with a 58 to win the Tom Suchanek Athletic Scholarship Fund Outing Saturday at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Mike Larabee, Tom Rogers, Forbes Byron and Rich Peel won low net with a 56, while Vinny Melendez, Tim Kenny, Joe Kais and Andy Hamilton took second with a 56.
Bob Provost, Jess Provost, Carl Hoynoski and Jodi Hoynoski won Mixed gross with a 61. Karen Conley, Jacque Kenney and Annette Lyght won the Women’s gross with a 69.
Ricky Adams was closest to the pin on No. 2 at 4 feet, 7 inches, while Mary Morley was the women’s closest to the pin winner at 12 feet, 4½ inches.
Montague Mug
The 38th annual Montague Mug Race will be held Aug. 19 at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common in Montague.
The race is 5½ miles and pewter mugs will be awarded to the top male and female finishers, while coffee mugs will be awarded to the top finishers in each division.
T-shirts will be given to the first 90 registrants.
The 2-mile Mini Mug race, now in its 14th year, will take place at 8:35.
