If you’ve ever passed by Tim de Christopher’s Rock, Paper, Scissors sculpture in Turners Falls and wondered about the process of its creation, then all your questions will soon be answered.
De Christopher, a Turners Falls stone sculptor, will present a lecture describing the making of Rock, Paper, Scissors at the Gill-Montague Senior Center, 62 5th St. in Turners Falls, at 5:30 p.m. on June 16.
De Christopher will talk about the concept that inspired the piece, how he presented his idea to the town, and, most of all, the execution of the work. De Christopher’s sculpture proposal was selected by nine judges from among 30 applications, with applicants as far away from Seattle.
Rock, Paper, Scissors is carved from native sandstone, Indiana limestone and indigenous granite. Unveiled last June at the pedestrian park at the intersection of Avenue A and 3rd Street, the work brings a lively representation of the history and culture of Turners Falls to pedestrians strolling by, waiting for the light to change or relaxing in the corner mini-park.
Included in his talk, which is sponsored in part by the Montague Cultural Council, will be a short film illustrating the process of creating Rock, Paper, Scissors, and a live demonstration of how de Christopher carves in stone. Food and drinks will also be available. Donations will be accepted at the door.
