METHUEN — Animal welfare officials say most of the hundreds of roosters seized from a suspected illegal cockfighting site will have to be euthanized.
The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is housing the birds at its farm in Methuen, says the roosters are extremely aggressive and cannot be rehabilitated or retrained.
Northampton police seized about 400 birds from a farm in the city last Friday. About three-quarters of them are roosters bred for fighting.
Officials discovered signs of cockfighting during a barn inspection, including the birds, gloves used during fights and a bag of medication commonly used in cockfights. Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states.
The farm’s owner says he rented the space to another person and had never been inside.
There have been no arrests.
CAMBRIDGE — Police at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are investigating the third report of a sexual assault this month.
A woman told campus police she was sleeping at a fraternity house when she awoke to find a man next to her touching her leg around 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Police say the man ran out of the room and down a stairwell.
Police searched the house but couldn’t find the suspect.
A woman reported being raped in a campus dorm on May 5. Another woman reported an assault at a different fraternity two weeks later.
MIT officials didn’t respond to a request for comment.
FRAMINGHAM — Police had to decontaminate a station cell after a prisoner apparently smuggled the powerful opioid fentanyl inside.
Framingham police discovered the drug in a cell Monday following an arrest. Police tested the substance and determined it was fentanyl.
Lt. Patricia Grigas says prisoners in the cellblock were evacuated and the area was decontaminated. The station can hold 21 prisoners.
Police haven’t released the identity of the prisoner involved but said charges are pending.
Grigas says it’s unclear how the drugs passed through police security. It remains under investigation.
LAWRENCE — A Lawrence woman is dead and her husband is facing a murder charge.
Police Chief Roy Vasque said officers responded to a Doyle Street address shortly after 5 p.m. Monday and found the married couple both suffering from stab wounds.
Vasque said the two apparently stabbed each other.
They were treated at the scene before being taken to Boston hospitals.
The Essex district attorney’s office says the woman, 28-year-old Yesinia Torres, died during surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Her husband, 32-year-old Joel Monegro, was charged with murder. He remains at Tufts Medical Center where he is recovering from his injuries.
His arraignment hasn’t been scheduled and it was unclear if he has a lawyer.
WORCESTER — The Worcester teenager killed over the holiday weekend was remembered at vigil for being a good kid, who loved music and basketball.
Friends and family members gathered at a Worcester park Monday night to remember 16-year-old Sidney Krow Jr.
Krow was shot just after 11 p.m. Saturday while out with a group of friends. His death was the city’s first homicide of the year.
Relatives remembered him as an outgoing and funny kid who was friends with everyone and said they doubted he was the target of the shooter. His sister, Najah Krow, says he wasn’t a troublemaker and didn’t hang around with gangs.
Krow was a sophomore at the Gerald Creamer Center.
Detectives continue to investigate and no arrests have been announced.
