GREENFIELD — Residents will be getting more trees as part of the city’s Arbor Day efforts.
Greenfield will be celebrating the day with the planting of an October Glory red maple at noon today, April 27. The event, happening at the Greenfield swimming area on Nash’s Mill Road, will include a proclamation read by Mayor William Martin.
According to Director of Public Works Don Ouellette, the tree is one of 50 that are expected to be planted this year at a number of public areas in the city. These locations include the John Zon Community center and the Tyler Place and East Greenfield pumping stations.
Four additional trees are also expected to be planted across the river from where the red maple is being planted but at a later date, Ouellette said.
The city is also providing interested residents with a chance to have a free tree planted in front of their homes by the DPW. Ouellette said that his department already has a list of 60 interested residents but others are encouraged to request trees, as well.
Ouellette said that the homes that get trees will be determined on a case-by-case basis and will begin being planted in the coming weeks.
