Despite a seventh-inning comeback bid that put the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Greenfield High School suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday afternoon.

On the road in the Berkshires, the Green Wave battled back from a 3-0 deficit with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but Mount Everett Regional School pitcher Faith Angell held on to give the host Eagles a 3-2 independent softball victory in Sheffield.

Mount Everett (2-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Gwen Carpenter laced a two-run double to get the hosts off and running.

The Eagles tacked on one more in the fifth inning before Greenfield (2-1) got to work in its final at-bat. Lizzy Howland led off the seventh with a solo home run over the fence, and Gianna Conte singled and scored on a Racquel Provost RBI single that cut the deficit to 3-2. The Wave had a chance to tie the game or take the lead, but Angell got a strikeout to end the game with two runners on and Mount Everett survived.

Howland had two hits to pace Greenfield, including a fifth-inning double. Samantha Smith also had a hit, as Mount Everett held a 6-5 edge in that department.

Greenfield starter Olivia Joy struck out 11 and walked two in the complete-game effort. Angell finished with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks over seven innings of work.

“She changed speeds a lot on us,” Greenfield coach Rian Lovett offered of Angell.

Pioneer 27, Smith Voke 1 — A 14-run second inning provided more than enough offense, as Pioneer Valley Regional School blasted its way to a second five-inning softball rout in as many days Wednesday.

Kaylee Gibson had five hits and Steph Scoville smacked a home run and a triple to lift the Panthers to a 27-1 win over Smith Vocational & Agricultural High School in an independent softball game at Sheldon Field in Northampton.

Pioneer (4-2), which defeated Holyoke High School in a five-inning contest Tuesday, led 4-1 after one inning and turned on the jets in the second with a 14-run output.

While Gibson and Scoville set the tone offensively, Sammie Martinez had two hits, including a triple, while Shelby Avery and Olivia Rowe also had a pair of hits in the win. Jennie Fuller, Jill Gadreault and Aliyah Kimball had singles as part of Pioneer’s 17-hit attack.

Gibson went all five innings in the circle to earn the pitching victory. She struck out nine and walked seven.

• In JV action, Lillia Kachelmeyer tossed a one-hitter and Pioneer thumped Smith Voke, 25-2, on Wednesday.

Kachelmeyer struck out 12 batters in the win. Tayla Sadlowski hit a pair of grand slams and added two more singles en route to eight RBI. Caitlin Hale had four hits while Erin Kimball and Mya Cooke had three hits each.

Turners 18, Belchertown 1 (5 inn.) — Aly Murphy and Jade Tyler clubbed home runs, and Turners Falls High School exploded for 11 runs in the first inning to rout Belchertown High School, 18-1, in an independent softball game Wednesday at the Bourdeau Fields Complex.

Aly Murphy drove in four runs to pace the Powertown (3-0), while sister Taylor Murphy had a double and drove in three runs. Olivia Whittier, Lexi Lacey and Abby Loynd had two hits each, while Taryn Thayer singled and drove in a run.

The offensive outburst was plenty for Tyler, who started the game and went three innings to pick up the win in the five-inning run-shortened game. She faced the minimum, striking out six, before giving way to Peyton Emery for the final two frames. Making her season debut, Emery struck out five and walked one.

Through three games, Turners has outscored its opponents by a 44-1 margin.

South Hadley 9, Mahar 8 — Emilee Ottomaniello drilled a walk-off triple in the bottom of the seventh inning to thwart an impressive Mahar Regional School comeback bid and give South Hadley High School a 9-8 independent softball win Wednesday in South Hadley.

Mahar (1-3) trailed 8-2 in the sixth inning before pushing a pair across in the frame. The Senators didn’t go away, scoring four more in the seventh to tie the game on the road. Ottomaniello drove in a run on the triple in the bottom of the frame however, sealing the win.

“Proud of the kids because they didn’t go away late in the game,” Mahar coach Jerry Duguay lauded.

Juliana Herbert hit her first home run of the season for the Senators, while Megan Rich had two hits, including a triple. Skylar Dodge drove in two runs. Keanna Thompson had a hit, scored two runs and a tossed in an RBI in her first varsity appearance, while Jazmine Vezina also had a hit.

Lily Spencer tripled for Frontier (3-2), which had its three-game winning streak halted. Kelsey Jarvis added a double.

Ludlow scored seven runs in the sixth inning to break open a 2-1 game.

Athol 20, Amherst 3 — Haley Bigwood came through with a big game in the circle and at the plate and Athol High School erased a 3-1 deficit en route to a convincing 20-3 win over Amherst Regional High School in an independent softball game Wednesday in Amherst.

Bigwood clubbed a three-run home run in the top of the third inning to give Athol (2-1) its first lead of the game. She added a triple at the plate, and struck out 12 in a complete-game victory in the pitching circle.

The Red Raiders put things out of reach late, scoring four runs apiece in the third, fourth and fifth innings before tacking on seven in the sixth to bring the game to a halt due to the run rule.

Eighth-grader Sadey Lehtomaki had four hits for the Raiders. Destiny Wrigley added three hits, including a double. Amber Mahony smacked a pair of hits, including a triple, while Angelica Baptista also registered a pair of hits.

The Raiders held a decisive 15-3 hits edge and the defense didn’t commit an error behind Bigwood.
